So, is this about soundtrack or score? Two very different arguments here....I'll stick with score

This isn't even a debate:

Nino Rota. He scored all of Fellini's films, and many, many more. One of the most prolific composers in Cinema. You guys would know him as the man behind "The Godfather" theme, and other Copolla films.
John Williams is decent, but a b1tch compared to Rota. Williams would even admit that...

da man

As for the specific films as example, I'd go
La Strada
8 1/2
Godfather

Oh, and I forgot to give props to Morricone as well. I believe he and Rota are the top two composers by volume. That doesn't mean too much on it's own, but the fact that they are both so good, and generally regarded as the best...is what matters

The song

If you enjoyed the movie, you may enjoy this performance. It's legendary. The vocals that begin at :50 are pretty amazing.

You cant forget "Story of a Soldier" either from that score.

My top scores:
The Truman Show
Halloween
Requiem of a Dream
Anything Danny Elfman (Batman, Pee Wee, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, etc.)
Anything Ennio Morricone (Good Bad and the Ugly, Untouchables, The other Spaghetti Westerns he scored, etc)
Anything John Williams (Jaws, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Schindlers List etc.)
Cool Hand Luke
The Deer Hunter

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - James Horner

INCREDIBLY evocative. I don't like his other stuff as much, though. John Williams gets my vote for overall quality.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was imo one of the three finest westerns ever filmed. The soundtrack and cast had few equals. The cinematography was simply brilliant.

Definitely one of my favorite old school western cowboy movies. "When you have to shoot, shoot, don't talk!"

How could I forget Last of the Mohicans???

I saw it recently, and really it was pretty forgettable. The soundtrack was very good and very well used though.

As to the rest of it, the story doesn't really seem to go anywhere, and then doesn't end... I thought I remembered really liking it, which is why I wanted to watch it again, but it didn't hold up... maybe it's just me.

Thats what I meant....since this is a soundtrack thread!

Too many to choose from.

The launch scene in Apollo 13 is incredible.

Ya know, I hadn't heard The Ecstasy Of Gold in years, but now that I have, it reminds me a lot of Krystal's music from Dark Wizard (Sega CD fantasy strategy). Awesome game, awesome soundtrack. I have carried the game around as just a CD to listen to many times.

good call on Moriccone. They honored him tonight at the Oscars. Nice little piece they put together for him.
