Just an FYI this company is a royal pain to deal with. I have their first line of fingerprint Identification Systems, and have talked with tech support more than I would care to admit. Their software is MS OS specific, eg: 98 doesn't work on NY, doesn't work on 2000, etc. And the do not support ANY UNIX operating systems. Just a heads up.

Call me morbid, but hypothetically speaking, if someone were to cut off your finger, would it allow them access to your files?
This may at first seem like a silly question to ask, but in other countries some ATMs are outfitted with fingerprint pass-keys
instead of passcodes like we have in the U.S. And they have worked out the technology, so one would not be able to cut
off someone's finger and use it. Don't ask me how, but I read up on this stuff several years ago. One of the many reason
that we haven't gone to fingerprint pass-keys in the U.S. is the bottom line (MONEY). The banks do not want to have to
retrofit all their ATMs with this feature. It would cost them millions and millions.

i have heard they have systems to screen out dead digits no blood flow, no pulse etc.

more expensive of course.

anyways, do these systems allow you to protect just certain files?

say some pr0n u don't want people getting their grubby hands on?

Alright, but where exactly can you buy one of these for $69? I have clicked on a bunch (though not all yet) of the online vendors that it has linked and they are all like "$99.95" or "on sale for $124.95"

Money is not the issue. The issue is that fingerprint authentication is garbage. Why?

I've actually bought this exact digitalPersona device on a hot deal from this very forum last year for $55 brand new. Few things I'd like to share:

1. Wait for the price to come down more, it was selling for $55 brand new last year.
2. This is for purely convenience, not security. A hacker can just social engineer your password instead of going through the whole process of cutting off your finger, then he can unplug the device from your usb port and log in using your password...
3. This mostly only works with Windows login passwords and website logins, not much else.
4. Make sure the drivers support Win2k if you have 2k, when I bought this the drivers were only for WinXP.

Treat it like a cool toy, not your definitive security device. That's all, enjoy..

I have had one of these for years (got it back in 1999) still working like a charm. only 2 gripes

1. When i went to windows 2k they zaped me for a software upgrade (made them promisis a free upgrade to xp (this was before xp was delayed over a year )

2.when xp came out they had no software ready and it took them 3+ months to get me a useagble beta for xp pro and then anouther for xp.

Besided that i love this thing beets renetering passwords over and over (like on MMRPG's when the servers are busy) and keeps my family out of my pc.

It is interesting that people feel that fingerprint biometric recognition devices are the "holy grail" to identity protection. Newer fingerprint systems will incorporate IR scanning, so dead fingers will not pass since they do not possess a fresh blood supply. I worked with iris recognition systems, and some of the earlier ones could be fooled with highly detailed photographs. However, if these devices are used in conjunction, then it will result in a near-foolproof system. This is to debunk the posts that fingerprint biometric recognition is worthless; it is VERY viable, and the next generation of devices will demonstrate its efficacy.

I love it, works well. you can use either the finger thing or type in your password to get into xp. this is just a fun toy, or make it easy to get in. its also cool for multipul users. if person A is on, and person B wants to get on, they tough their finger on it, and it switches the user to B from A. Great feature.
