I just finished my first build.. it took me a little under 3 hours (slow i know).
anyways here are the main specs again...
AMD 64 3200+
Abit KV8 Max3
1Gb DDR
WD 250G HDD
Radeon 9800Pro
After reading the responses to some posts I decided to go with the stock thermal pad stuff that came on the heat sink.
I checked the temps and the CPU temp is at 52-53 C at idle.
I didnt get a copy of XP pro yet, so I installed Win98 and ran BF1942 for about 5 minutes, checked the temp and it was about 55 C.
Do these sound like normal temps for this chip? I dont want to get into a long session of gaming and suddenly have it crap out on me. I do have some AS ceramique I could use, but would rather not take it all apart again unless I have to.
Also I have the chip set to shutdown when it hits 90C...is that too high?
thanks for all the help so far!

Oh im using the antec sonata case as well

set CPU shutdown to 80C.
temps are normal

Nick, he COULD have used arctic silver, but are you suggesting that a beginner should risk to potentially damage the CPU if he applies it too thickly, just for the gain of a few degrees, which wouldnt matter if he isnt going to overclock?

Thats a nice system you built there.

3 hours sounds good for the first time. The first time I did it I forgot to put in the standoffs to elevate the motherboard correctly enough so that the PCI/AGP slots would fit correctly in the case. That took another ....20 minutes. Then the head casing wiring for the power on, speaker, LED lights, and Reset buttons, that took another 10-20 minutes extra to figure out.

Nice rig...3 hours is awesome for a beginner
53 Idle does sound high to me...make sure you have proper ventilation with case fans, etc. I know people that have HIGH temps with the stock 120mm's in the sonata. I recommend getting 2 120MM panaflo's to keep her cool.

Cheers.
