FIOS available in my area - any reason why should I get it?

the northern more affulent suburbs of dallas have it.

They determine which areas are best by population density and income. Obviously they want the most customers (who are willing to spend $50/mo.) possible. Homes around here are minimum $300k and are starting to get lit up... but I can confirm they hit the better towns ($600k) first. They're doing all the towns here eventually.

I've had FIOS available for quite some time now. My guy friends have been harassing me to get it, but I don't do anything, but sit online and surf anymore. It's not worth the extra few bucks to me (I have Verizon DSL).

Although I have really thought about getting FIOS and charging my friends to come over to play their LAN games and what not

The houses in my area are $400K and above nowadays.

Yeah, I would think Plano, Frisco, and North Dallas would have it. I sure as hell don't expect for it to be available in South Dallas. That would be a waste of money for Verizon.

Keller (dallas suburb) is the test market for everything fios related. They have the new fios tv service out and the lineup so far is very impressive. (and this just jsut early beta still)

Several months ago I remember checking for FIOS availability and it told me it's not yet available, but I entered my e-mail address so they can notify me when it is.

Today I was talking to a friend about it and decided to run the check again- it's available now! WTF they never e-mailed me!

Oh well, gonna try to get it hooked up later this month but I have a few questions:

As I was browsing the sign-up form I notice you can choose between a 4-port wired router or a wireless router (for extra $). This seems to indicate you can use this bandwidth for your own personal home network however you like and they actually encourage it. However in the second part of the form there was some drop down where you choose how many computers you want to hook up to it and there's a charge of like $75 per extra computer!? I guess that's a setup fee but what's that for?

I currently have a private home network sharing DSL over 4 computers, can't I just plug in my current network to the new FIOS modem (I guess it will have a modem) and be done with it?

Edit: OK Nevermind about the additional computers, I found a FAQ which explained it better than the sign-up form.

But here's another question: they say they do not permit you to run a web server- either personal or commercial. And they probably block port 80 like they did with my current DSL service too. I got around this up to now by having a 3rd party DNS server route requests to port 80 on my domain to port 8080 on my computer, which my web server was listening to. Would I still be able to do this via FIOS or are they more strict about it?

I'm adjacent to an AT&T transcontinental fiber line; but I won't see FIOS at this address in my lifetime. We only *JUST* got cable intarweb capability.

Your standard user who surfs the web and reads email could get by with 1.5mb just fine. FIOS is for gamers who want awesome ping, power users who will actually USE a 15+ meg pipe, or people who want faster upload speeds. I reguarly terminal server into my PC and i can tell you that 2 megs is WAY faster than 512kb. It also allows me to download large files and play CS at the same time without really any lag.

I was paying $60 for 3mb cable in an apt a few months ago. I bought a 360k house in a nearby city after learning that FIOS was being offered. Ok, so that wasn't the only reason for my purchase. But it sure was a nice bonus after i found the place i wanted.

You could do that with FIOS, but i assume that's violating their TOS agreement. I personally would not host anythign but the most trivial of websites on a home connection. Not when you can pay a couple of bucks a month for 99.9% uptime on a dedicated server.

Fios was rolled out in Huntington Beach about a year ago i have had it for two months and lov'in it. i just cant wait till verizon offers Fios video and their voice over ip service in a package. Theirs no stoping them!

I'm reading on FIOS forums that people aren't getting above 5Mbps downloads on bittorrent anyway (not enough people upping at high speeds). I'd still get it, but don't expect the world.

its probably due to the fact that they havent tweaked their upstream if there using bittorrent or azureus

You're right that Verizon will give people the higher DSL speed for the same price, but I'm too far from the central office to get 3Mb.
