So I've been paying 77.99/month for the past year and all of a sudden I'm getting billed at 84.99. I ask a VZ rep what's up with this, and they said "Your Internet service is not under any contract and subject to rate changes." Anyone else had them just randomly raise the monthly price by 9%? I'm going to start looking into other options, fucking greedy assholes.

yeah, my triple play went from $110 to $220 in about five years. I switched to cox for a few months and verizon offered me the triple play for 59$ for 2 years so i went back.
Just cancel or threaten to cancel and see what they give you.

Did you have a 1yr promo or anything? My Cox bill just went up, but I had a 12mo promotion. Now I have to call them again.

It's normal. Happens with Optimum which is the direct competitor here. But what's good about FIOS is that there's always some kind of promotion. They give a ~$10 "valued customer" discount for a year (renewable) just for asking. I'm currently on a $20 Double Up and Save promo for having VZW data + FIOS internet for 2 years (not available anymore) - not combinable with "valued customer". There's also a $10 Verizon Connections discount depending on your employer (http://verizonconnections.vzcomportal.com/). I also renewed a 2-year agreement which knocks off $35 from the normal triple play price. I signed up for FIOS 4 years ago and I only went from $89/mo. to $99/mo. now because of different promos. This includes the various taxes that have gone up. I had them for over 5 years at a different house too so I trust them and renewing to a 2-year contract is an easy decision for me.

Optimum on the other hand - my parents had them for $70/mo. when they signed up and when that promo was over they increased them to $120 and would not drop any further. I switched them over to FIOS.

Look into the best deal from any competitor - then call Verizon back and say you've been offered X. Maybe they'll come back with a better price, if not, go with the new service. You'll probably want to use this system every year or two to keep the good prices coming in.

For me, RCN kind of pissed me off - they had a built-in $5/year incrase for 3 years for 50/5 service with extremely basic cable + HD recorder box (which I knew about when I signed up, and was okay with that), but then sometime last year, they tacked on a $3/mo OTA retransmission "fee". The fee seems like such a bs way to get around the wording of the standing terms.

that is normal. the 2 year pricing is a special contractual rate. my rate went up about $25 after the 2 years was up. all i did was just talk to them on chat and after about 30 minutes on chat i got it back down to what it was for another 2 years.

or you could just cry about it because you didn't know the terms that you agreed to.

Yeah the only problem with the $10/month bundle discount is that I don't want a bundle. They did offer me that, but my rate would go up to $90 (99.99-10.00) for internet and basic cable which doesn't include ANY sports. I don't even watch TV as it is (only sports.. at uh, friends' houses), so raising my rate by 5/month isn't what I want. Esp since they already just raised my rate to 85 for no fucking reason other than to give their execs and shareholders a nice Christmas bonus.

Not sure if I could get higher than 50/50 from Cox or Comcast for $85/month but I'll check. In any case, it's good to know that others are also getting their rates raised for no reason.

If you had no contract they can do whatever they want. They are a business and they are in business for a reason. There's a reason people actually sign contracts and commit.

Those who buy package deals get better discounts. It's not just a FIOS thing. If I only wanted internet, would I expect to get just the same internet price as someone who has the triple play?

Or you could learn to read. I never said I was on a contract with them, no contract ran out. I was originally on the 15/5 plan for $60 but they got rid of that and made everyone upgrade to 25/25 (for free) since they upgraded their lines. Then they coaxed me up to 50/50 for $15 more a month to 74.99, then raised my rate to 77.99 for the past 10 months or so, and now jacked it up to 84.99 for no reason.

is it all of a sudden randomly? Like you were out of contract, paying month to month and then all of a sudden it went up?

or your contract just expired and the rates went up... all of a sudden?

Yes, I understand how the package discount works. All I want is internet, and if a competing cable company like Comcast can give me a better deal for $85 or less then I may go with them.

Here's my bill.

11/2013 - 59.99 (15/5)
12/13- 59.99 (15/5)
1/14 - 69.99 (upgrade to 50/50)
2/14 - 77.99 (randomly raised)
3/14- 77.99
4/14- 77.99
5/14- 77.99
6/14- 77.99
7/14- 77.99
8/14- 77.99
9/14- 77.99
10/14- 77.99
11/14- 77.99
Last week I call them (again) to complain that I'm only getting 5 upload (not 50 as advertised) and they checked my account. I look today and bill for December is now changed up to 84.99. Assholes.

You guys are so damn spoiled compared to what i am paying that it isn't even funny,i would trade with you in heartbeat lol.

My location has a monopoly with one dsl ISP for anything outside of dial up/sat.

Try going to sleep at night knowing someone is paying $105 for 10up/1.5up which includes unlimited home phone.Best part is when you decide to try and ditch the home phone and your bill is only a few bucks cheaper lol.

This lovely ISP is Windstream, Verizon doesn't even service Arkansas but if it did i would be so done with these assholes.

That's how they get you. Those calls to upgrade are usually promo prices, then they stop offering the cheaper plans so you can't switch back.

They did the same to me way back when. I just wanted cheap Internet, so I got the 1.5Mb/sec plan for $14.99/month. They called me up some time later and offered 10Mb/sec for $24.99/month. I agreed cause high def streaming would be nice. A year later, the bill was $54.99/month. Now it's $57.99 since they did away with the savings you get by providing your own modem instead of leasing. If I said no orignally, I'd probably be paying $17.99 and be perfectly happy, and richer. But no, they need my money more than I do so they can provide more channels that no one watches.

Ah, that makes sense. So promo creep is how they get you. Thanks for sharing.

skipsneeky2, now I don't feel so bad. Maybe I should just be thankful for 50/50@$85. I will say that 25/10 cable I had before Fios was just awful. Peak hours, it was unusable. Overall Fios has been better.

Frankly I'm surprised anyone is willing to pay more than $50/mo. for internet only. Why not just get the double play bundle at your price? Discount and rate lock-in.

EDIT>> I see you already said it's +$5.

Much like cell phone plans, there's a minimum everyone needs to pay these days for data. You're lucky if you're under $75/mo. with a decent plan just by yourself.

Oh god Windstream pretty much up till a few months ago pretty much would slow to a halt about 8pm.Everything would buffer and your 10mb dsl magically turns to like maybe 1mb.There was cases of people dropping below even that lol.

Video gaming pretty much was out of the question about that time if you wanted a quality connection worth half a fuck,if you happened to have a few people maybe checking their Facebook you mind as well just turn off your computer and go read a damn book or do some chores and wait your turn.

It is likely your upgrade was a promo. You could call and bitch about it and likely get a promo deal, but it would be under contract.

I have actually been debating switching to Verizon Fios lately. Comcast has been awful in terms of speed. I used to have a very stable connection, however, lately, I've been having to reset my modem to get anything over <1mbps download every couple of hours.

I'm currently trying to sign up for comcast as I type this and getting nickel and dimed to death. I currently have their basic cable that I subbed for last year in order to get their 50Mbps for $49.99/mo. We have DTV for tv services but off contract and now paying like $108.99/mo. Trying to switch to Comcast double play for $89.99/mo which includes the 50Mbps we already have, so it's a good deal. But I need to activate 3 boxes at $35/each, an 1 time installation fee of $49.99 and a one time upgrade fee of $49.99. Complete bullshit.
