We signed up as well. From what I understand it's $70 the first year, then $85 for the second year. Hopefully the 3rd year and beyond isn't $200. In my area 50/5 is the cable company's fastest speed, which they charge $70 a month. Oh and Fios, of course requires $150 for their router, which is slower than a 3 year old Netgear R7000.

They dont require the router, there are plenty of people running PFsense boxes hooked up to Nighthawks or Unifi HD AC or similar wireless access points/routers.

They DO need the router potentially for activation, and especially if you have set top boxes and want them to have video on-demand and guide information, then you'll need to use the G1100 router, or you can use a MoCA bridge to take ethernet from your router and convert it to Coax for your set top box.

However, if you're internet only you can use whatever router you want. Hell you can plug your computer directly into the ONT if you felt like it.

I meant that it's required to activate. I've got internet only and I'm using an R7800. It just bugs me that I had to pay $150 for a slow router that will only be used for troubleshooting.

You didn't have to. Techs have them on their trucks, you can ask them to activate with one on the truck and take it with them. Happens all the time, just check DSLreports FiOS subforum, dozens of people do this.

Further, i'm pretty sure with Ethernet installs and internet only you don't even need it for activation, it's only needed for set top box activation with TV service.

You can setup a new gigabit service with your own router as several people on DSLreports have reported doing that within the past week. Though Verizon might lie to you and say it's needed. And they'll also not provide remote support without their router hooked up.

I haven't had a Verizon supplied router since the first few days of 150mb service back in 2012. As soon as my router arrived with my moving truck I ditched the Verizon stuff and haven't used it since (actually turned it in). I've been through several speed upgrades with no issue.

Currently running an Edgerouter Lite with AC HD APs. I get 800+ megabit over wifi which is lovely.

Their router isn't that bad. Granted, I don't have many devices simultaneously using wifi but I hit 600Mbps via 5Ghz.

I have a 30/50 connection and it's super fast for my needs, gig would be nice but honestly unless it was close to the same price I probably would not get it even if we had it available. Now if they actually allowed to host servers and gave you multiple static IP addresses then I would as I could monetize it... but they don't want you to monetize it so that's why they have those rules.

When it costs me $30 to "upgrade" from 1gbps to 25/25mbps, I'll be sticking with 1gbps

If you get the proper promotions, it's basically their cheapest internet tier right now from them.

Just got mine activated. This is hooked up via wifi to my router which is bridged to the verizon router. Meh good enough since I'm saving money over what I was paying previously for 100/100

We can get it here, but unwilling to shell out over $130/mo. for the triple play, let alone internet only. I torrent tv episodes and watch 1 at a time so I can wait for them. Don't need faster than 50/50.

Haha yeah at that price I'd probably consider it because why not. Here it's several hundred per month to get the 250mb package (highest tier), so as nice as that would be, I don't really need it.

Yeah, most client devices simply don't have wifi radios powerful enough to deal with over ~300-500mbps anyway.

My fastest device is my Note5 and I have gotten ~450-500mbps at max from the Verizon provided router.

Everything else in the house is wired and gets full 900/900+ mbps

Yeah around here we have several options for 1gbps or even higher.

Comcast offers 2gbps for $149.99 ($500-1000 install fees).

My own plan is right around $100 for 1gbps.

Everything is cheaper when you steal it.

I've been looking into this, ever since a relative saw a web ad for "FIOS Gigabit", and I searched it, and found out it was offered. Plus someone here posted a speedtest.

I've been checked my online configuration tool every few days. Still not offered to me. Wondering if I should bother to call. I trust the online configurator more, as far as price goes, over calling in to billing.

Not sure what you mean? Steal internet?

If you mean steal tv episodes - we pay for cable already (I said I won't pay over $130). I just don't sit in front of the tv to watch shows as they air.

In the Online configuration thing are you seeing a max of 500mbps or 750mbps?

500 still the max I can get but the eastern end of the county evidently has the gigabit service available so I guess it will eventually creep out here much like the initial FIOS rollout. Given that I am now open to changing from DTV since I no longer subscribe to NFL Sunday ticket I wish they would hurry up and get this done.

Verizon not in my area. ATT offers... 10mb when I bring up my address. Think I'll stick with Spectrum's 60 and 100mb cable.

For what it's worth, the gigabit service wasn't offered to me in the online configuration tool. It was only allowing me 150/150.

Just tried looking in my area as a new customer (used in private browser so cookies didn't have a chance to effect anything), it's only giving two options, 50mbps or 1gbps.

That's pretty much my justification for pirating TV shows and movies, I just like to watch them in the order I want when I want vs waiting for them to air or having to remember to PVR them. Technically, I'm not really pirating it if I could watch it on TV without paying extra anyway.

Though I have been toying with canceling my TV and maybe even my land line, need to see how much less it would cost if I go with just internet. Then yeah I guess I won't be able to justify my pirating anymore. I can always get Netflix though.

Does anyone know if Usenet/Newsgroups is the only thing that can saturate a 1 Gbps line ?
Torrents, Steam, star citizen, etc.

Many things can saturate 1gbps. The biggest issue is most things aren't big enough to even warrant full saturation. a 5GB file will likely finish downloading before your connection has enough time to ramp up to full speeds..
