Fire Wire Networking

Anyone using firewire networking right now? gig over copper is to costly and fire wire is 400Mbps. With 32bit pci i wouldn't get more than that on GOC anyway.

I would have to refer you to the first thread gigabit over coper. But in short i am running my network and my cousins he lives next door. Well coffee and servers dont work well together so half of my net is fried as far as the server and some related nics. Since i have to replace them i was look for more speed. We run 100 base T now.

As I replied in the other thread, its unlikely that you will notice a big performance boost. Are you running switched 100BaseT or just using a HUB ? Going switched may make a very big difference (since not only do you get less collisions but also get full duplex)

Yes i am using a hub at the moment. I am looking at all options since i have to redo the net why not opt for something a little faster? The other reason is i'm not real impressed with my experence with my 100baseT maybe its the hub as you say i don't know. The slowest comp in the net is a K6-2 550 w/geforce2 MX, 128MB ram, and a UDMA 66 7200rpm HD, netgear 310 NIC. All my NICs are the netgear 310s. I have had this net for over a year and when playing UT it can lag so thats why i was considering uping the net. Any suggestions? If my mind was made up i wouldn't be here so i am open to any ideas.

I will go run some tests and check the lines. You think maybe i have a bad hub from the start when i first bought it? I know nobody besides me that runs a net to ask them to look at mine.

Ok testing finished and i am only getting a little over 10baseT speed so you tink its the hub???

Definately thinks its a hub. If you want to test things out, go and get a 4 or 8 port switch (you should be able to get one, possibly with a router for about $100). You should see a tremendous boost in perfomance. Second, how is the cabling between the two homes ? WHere is the cable running, who created the connectors (badly made connectors can be a great source of loss)

All cabling is CAT 5 factory assembled. i have a cable tester and it says all is fine with the cables. Cable between the houses is 150 foot in length. It is run under ground in a sealed one piece plastic pipe (its water feed line for like a well 1 inch ID). I will order a switch now but with out the router don't like them. Thanks for your help. i will post the results.
