Firefox 13 offers but can't remember my passwords

One site is annoying in that the password is my library card number, 15 digits or so, impossible to remember. On my Windows 7 laptop, Firefox offers to remember my password for this site and when I click the button...

[Remember]

... nothing happens, the popup and button remain there. I click, the button responds by blinking but the button and popup remain and next time I visit the site the whole charade repeats. Dumb as a doorknob. What can I do about this, it would seem to be a bug in Firefox.

My library card is 14 numbers. I used to have a little keychain attachment with the number (easier to carry than an entire card), but you know what? After about 1 month, I was actually able to REMEMBER the number! I can remember it off the top of my head anytime now. So it's not impossible, just takes time.

I could do it, but that's just part of the problem. The computer refuses to remember any passwords in Firefox. It offers to remember each time and the [Remember] button refuses to work each time. Nutty as hell.

I have this very same problem which I have been unable to fix. I never had this problem until Firefox went to Firefox 13.

works for me. Dunno the fix, but maybe try a complete uninstall, including your profile, and see if that sorts it out.

What annoys me is that FF cannot recognize any user name that is typed in a field NOT called "Username." My Gmail address is my user name for several sites, and it is never remembered. Password, yes (because, I'm assuming, the field is called "password.") Needs to be fixed.

Yeah, I could memorize it, but even so it's a PITA to have to enter it every time along with my name at the library's website. I still haven't fixed this but I'm going to have a go at it today. I'm hoping I can do with without a totally clean reinistall of FF. I don't want to lose all my settings, customizations, plugins, maybe saved passswords (assuming they're in there somewhere), cookies, etc.

You could also try a clean installation but before backup your settings with Mozbackup and re-import them after you confirm that it is working again.

I have used FEBE in the past to save and restore FF settings etc. to my various PC machines. Is Mozbackup a better idea?

I use that. Now I don't need to remember most of my passwords.

Do you need to key in your master password every time you use it? That seems like a hassle, especially if your MP is strong (at least 10 characters, with caps/lower case, numbers...).

Not 100% sure but I believe that mozbackup lets you save more of the settings. It's worth trying out, very small download.

You could try upgrading to the latest version (15.0.1) and see if that helps. Otherwise, if a clean reinstall doesn't help, maybe it is a UAC or file permissions issue?

I'm running FF 13.01 on this machine. One of my other machines is noodling me to upgrade to version 15.01 or similar. I think I'll try that on this machine first and see if that fixes things. If not, I'll try your idea. Thanks!

I installed FF 15.0.1 on the machine but the problem continued. I remembered that there were FF forums that I'd visited before. I found the forum, logged in, posted in the bugs forum and got immediate help from an administrator. With that person's help I've evidently resolved the problem by renaming a couple of files in my FF profiles folder. Here's the paragraph from the thread that described the actions that fixed the problem, followed by a link to the thread:

Close Firefox and navigate to the profile folder -- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Locate files named signons?.*. That is, any file with a name that starts with "signons". Rename those files by adding "old" to the beginning of the name, eg. oldsignons.sqlite. Also find the file key3.db and rename that file to oldkey3.db. Restart Firefox and browse to a site where you would want to save a password and see what happens.
