I'm curious to know if I should update to Firefox 2.0 now that it's been officially released. I'm actually using 1.0.7 still after hearing about some problems with 1.5, notably the memory leak. Did they fix this in 2.0, and are there any other problems, new or otherwise, with 2.0? Thanks guys!

To Zombie,

You are a little ahead of me---I did not know 2.0 was out yet in non-beta---when I check my update tab on firefox 1.5.0.7--it shows no new updates--but I did finally confirm you are right,
its now available for download as a complete package.---5.6 megs as I recall.

But I have been with mozilla a very long time--in the form of the mozilla suite---and with firefox since 1.0---and everytime a new version is released---some one is having install new version problems when I visit the mozilla forums because I have extrely minor problems or I need some advice on some obscure feature.

But if you are still using some 1.0.x variant you are in for a treat---at firefox 1.5 all you have to do to upgrade is check for updates in help--or it will do it by itself--and its a small download--because you don't have to download the whole new program--then delete what you had--then install the new upgrade.---now its like windows updates--you just add some files to upgrade.----but firefox just keeps patching things with each new upgrade being better--I believe any memory leak is now long patched.

And I have also heard the 1.5 to 2.0 version upgrade is not all that radical. But can I guarantee you won't have some issues---thats a no---but I usually suck into each new upgrade and have yet to be burned yet.

And for that matter---seamonkey is the continuation of the mozilla suite with integrated e-mail client---now up to 1.0.5 or so---and it usually upgrades around the time firefox does.
But instead of getting conflicted---I am democratic and have both firefox and seamonkey---they use different profiles---I usually use firefox and my wife usually uses seamonkey on her computer.

And you might as well download firefox 2.0--and give it a try--if you don't like it---just go back to what you had--I assume you do retain a stored copy of 1.0.7.--and if you want e-mail for firefox you better upgrade thunderbird also.

This belong in software, not general hardware.

FF2.0 seems faster to me than 1.5.0.7 so it can definitely be recommended by me.

FF2.0 is packed full of all kinds of goodies and nice features. For one thing, it has a real time spell checker, which works in forums and all kinds of other things.

For what its worth, I did check on automatic updates on the mozilla forums. For those who have firefox 1.5.0.7---there will be a version released in a few weeks--1.5.0.8--that will work with automatic updates---and then the auto update feature will work to upgrade that to firefox 2.0.

But auto update won't work to go in a single step from 1.5.0.7 to firefox 2.0.

I still am running 1.5.0.7 because I'm too lazy to upgrade right now and what I have works Is FF2 that much better than 1.5?

I'm using it right now, and haven't encountered a problem yet. The refined GUI is quite nice, and the spell checker is simply genius. It works just like the checker in word so you can add words to the dictionary or download completely new ones if you like. I'm also mildly obsessive about spelling, so now I'm a much happier camper.

edit: Also, the major extensions like adblock/flashblock and ie view work in v2.0, but the less popular add-ons and many themes still need to be updated.

best broswer I ever used.
I love when they keep all the good things, and add a few more good things without overdoing it.

love the x on the tabs, love the spell checker, love the search hints, love the new icon skins.

FF 2.0 final is super. Since it is free, it is definitely worth the download. Forthose who use Roboform, FF 2.0 can't use the one that was with 1.5.0.6, and can't find a new one. But it is right there on Roboform's site - quick update, restart FF, and it is golden.

And, yes . . . this thread definitely belongs in SOFTWARE.

I also agree that this thread should have been posted in software---but it wasn't---no point in bemoaning it repeatedly.

The point is the thread is being addressed here with lots of good inputs---and maybe has given some who would not normally consider the firefox issues
a chance to see some different viewpoints.

So ZombieRitual needs to get a box of dry noodles---wet some--tie the wet noodles to a stick---and lash himself at least 10 times or until his sins are scorged away.
Meanwhile everyone else hopefully learned something---why worry about absolute forum posting boundaries?

In the pass along department--and things I had to check the Mozilla forums on---you can find the Firefox 2.0 spell checker under tools---options---advanced--then check or remove the check mark from check my spelling as I type. The spell checker is at work as I type this. When a word is mis-spelled, the spell checker will underline the word in red. Right clicking on a mis-spelled word will pop up suggestions on the hopefully correct spelling.

A spell checker similar to MS Word's is the biggest selling point to me, but i also like the "Undo close tab" thing; where if you close a tab you need, just right click on any of the tabs, and click "Undo close tab", it brings it right back (in the same spot it was originally, too).

Firefox 2.0 is great and you should definitely try it. Actually, I didn't realize that the spell checker was coming from the browser and not the forums. At first i thought AT forums had implemented something new and then i saw that the red squiggly lines were popping up on multiple sites. Very cool feature!
