I sure hope they decide to offer a way to keep the previous design (but likely not).
Many people are using the Classic Theme Restorer, but in reading reviews, it's not the perfect solution.

I was reading all the comments here and many people say since it's now like Chrome, they're going to use Chrome. After trying Chrome a few months ago, there were several things I didn't like, so FF is a lot better IMO. So the people saying they're going to just use Chrome doesn't make much sense, other than just for sake of boycotting.

yeah, threating to use chrome just because they changed to be (look) more like chrome is incredibly stupid as that's not sending a clear message

if you like the old UIs, go with something like Pale Moon, which even comes with the even older tabs on bottom layout by default, and still supports customization for tabs on top, etc

yeah, switched to pale moon a few weeks ago it "feels" faster at least. This new FF look seems... too much like chrome. Part of the appeal with FF for me was that it had a distinctly different interface from chrome.

I use both browsers (and now Pale Moon) btw.

FF has too much customisation to be like Chrome, here's my FF29,

Only thing not working for me is ForcastFox,but I'm sure there'll be an updated version soon for it.

Wow... it really does look just like Chrome. With the new sync tool, it works a lot more like Chrome as well.

I guess we all know where the Firefox developers work for their day jobs

Oh, and it breaks the HP UFT plugin. Again. I don't know what Firefox has against automated software testing, but it's annoying.

i think you were making a joke, but IIRC google did hire a bunch of FF devs years ago to work on chrome

I love the design of FF29. I was already happy with FF since I started using it in beta around 0.96 (and Netscape before that), but this is definitely better. Much cleaner, and removed most of the items I had on the address bar line and put them in the hamburger menu.

A+++++ would download again. Pleasantly surprised, and usually I hate change to avoid 'surprises'.

I like it. The look is a little cleaner, transitions within the app seem to be a bit smoother. Has anything looked for a change in memory usage?

The menu tab is a little bulky, but the menu bar is still easy to show/hide if needed. Didn't affect any of my add-ons either, which I applaud.

I'm going to give Firefox 29 a good week long trial. I'm normally an Opera (Yes even the Blink based Opera) user but I have a very open mind. The only thing I wish the new interface had was squared off tabs. The rounded edges kind of annoy me but I can deal with it, I won't be installing an addon just to change that.

Heeeeere we go again.

- Version 28 would start in about 10-15 seconds. Version 29 clocks in at 3 MINUTES. (Quad-core i7@3.2GHz, 8GB RAM, SSD)

- Changing the about:config setting browser.tabs.onTop no longer has any effect. Whether it's set to True or False, those tabs are going to the top of the screen, dammit.

- I guess it's the Windows 8 "thing" - the File/Edit/etc menu set is now embedded in the main title bar.

- I've been using the Status-4-Evar extension ever since Mozilla decided that no one ever used or wanted the Status Bar. It looks like v29 breaks that extension.

Bizarre. must be an addon.. over here it starts in 10s or less, on many different machines i've tried.

It seems like it is using less RAM now. I have been seeing around 1-1.1 GB usage lately and now it is around 8-900 MB. It seems a bit faster as well.

Mine starts in a few seconds max and that's with SSD as cache to mechanical HD on Win8.1 Pro x64.

Got the update here too. Spent quite a while undoing all the changes to get it back to a usable state. That done, it works just fine as usual so far. Not looking forward to fixing everyone else's browser.

Mine starts in less than two seconds, about 40 extensions installed and more than 70 tabs in the session. That's from a cold boot, first thing I do when Windows starts.

You can see my specs in my sig.

The secret? Not being an idiot and keeping my computer clean. But mostly not being an idiot.

going to go super way out on a limb (sarcasm) and guess that there's something fundamentally wrong with your hardware and/or software for that to happen

I'm hoping it's just an addon.

No other programs are acting weird, and the previous version worked perfectly fine. (Except that it wiped out lots of my custom settings when it was installed.)
Once it finally loaded, it worked fine, except for that tabs-on-top setting.

Maybe it's time for the old Windows tradition: Uninstall and reinstall. Which, given how many addons and customizations I have, is always a painful process.

Maybe it's time for the old Windows tradition: Uninstall and reinstall.

That won't help since that won't nuke your Firefox profile, and any addons, settings, etc. are stored in that profile.

You can have multiple profiles; one quick way of troubleshooting is to create a new profile and use that:
https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

Or, the even quicker-and-dirtier way to do it is to just open up Explorer and rename (or delete, but renaming is easier to undo ) the %AppData%\Mozilla directory and either rename or delete %LocalAppData%\Mozilla (the former is your profile; the latter is the cache and other things that are safe to just delete outright).

Edit: This is also an option:

Another option is to log in as a different user and see if the issue is still there...

.

i am not sure why firefox 29 would be slower to start up then firefox 28 because i only have a basic dual core amd cpu and i can't detect any slow down with firefox 29.

Easier way ie uninstall Firefox, run System Ninja http://singularlabs.com/software/system-ninja/ ,then clean install of Firefox and install extensions one at a time to see if any cause issues.

Let me just say that, on my work computer, my Firefox always starts in 3 or 4 seconds at most. And so did Chrome.

Until one day Chrome took TEN MINUTES to start. Firefox started normal as usual. I knew, obviously, there was something wrong on my side. Why did I know that? Because I'm not an idiot. It's not like there will be such an obvious problem with Chrome (or any other browser, for that matter) that'd get past the thousands of people testing it. So I tried disabling avast.

All worked well.

Lol. I uninstalled avast, switched to avira and all's well.

Make of that what you will.

Yeah.

Ugh.

I'm just not looking forward to that. I have 27 extensions installed, and have made various about:config tweaks to get it all nice and customized. v29 evidently takes exception to something.

Run System Ninja first to see if it helps,if not then you might have to do a clean install of FF later at some point.

I don't think there's a design issue with Firefox Australis.

The issue is the direction it's going. The design itself is pretty solid, way more solid than I've ever seen Firefox be in that department. The problem is the direction, and that direction is called chromification and irrelevance.

Looks like all browsers are heading toward getting their UI chrome based or lets say unified, this happens years ago if you remember when firefox introduced tabbed browser window, after sometime, IE did the same with IE7 then came Chrome.

Hoping that a new company comes out with cool ideas other than copying competitors which may lead to a battle between them like the legal war between Apple and Samsung.

The Chrome browser that the companies are trying to mimic has issues with memory consumption. The catch though is that Chrome is addictive, once you use it once and twice. You find yourself opening many tabs and your memory is already 90%, it happens to me all the time.
