I have FF 3.5 installed and the one thing that annoys me to no end is that when you have "Always Show The Tabs Bar" on and only have one tab open at the moment, you can't close the tab without opening a second tab first. This was not the case with FF 2.0.

I freaking HATE tabbed browsing. They're annoying as hell. All it does is eat yet more screen space showing exactly the same info I have in the task bar at the bottom of my screen for all the browser windows I have open. Note that I do NOT group similar items in my task bar.

The answer is an add-on called Tab Killer that gets rid of tabs entirely. It doesn't even show the option to open a url in a new tab, anymore. Version 2.0.2009050701 is the first one that works on FF 3.5. It's listed as "experimental," but I've been using it, and it's solid.

Personally, I'd be happiest if I could get whatever version of Mozilla was the base of my old Netscape 7.2 to work with current websites. NS 7.2 is still my preferred browser until I get to a page that crashes it. Of course, I'd want Tab Killer for that version, as well.

I am still undecided if I like tabs or not. I use to never use tabs but do now though I may go back to using windows. The biggest advantage of windows I can see is I can alt tab and see a live preview of them all really quickly. I do not group similar items in the task bar either I hate that feature of windows sense I can't see everything I have open without clicking on a certain window to see them all when it is on. I still wonder who came up with the idea of tab browsing and why ? Seems like every browser has it now a days but thankfully you can still use new windows.

should work

I didn't like it initially (in fact, hated it like when anti-lock brakes where first introduced on cars) but now can't imagine browsing without it. I'll use both tabs and separate browser instances for organization. I have the taskbar set to auto-hide so there isn't redundancy for me. I like lots of screen real estate. In any browser, I get rid of all the bars I can and move the url and search windows to the top or the menu-bar.

For those who haven't tried it, a second 20" monitor rotated 90* is the perfect browsing size - 1200x1600 goodness.

yea tabs are excellent. esp with mouse gestures (allinonegestures)
spawning new tabs in the background during browsing esp during searching for stuff is far easier than bringing up tons of windows.

All In One Gestures, AdBlock, FlashBlock and NoScript are, in my opinion, Firefox's "killer apps"! i just cant live without these.

I use a host file to block adds so would adblock make a difference?

Probably not, but it makes the process easier to deal with, and you can allow/disallow ads on specific sites. I'll turn ad blocking on and off depending on mood. I really don't mind ads, but I hate laggy ad servers. I'll turn them off so sites can get revenue, but if the ad servers start lagging, I'll turn adblocking on again.

Probably not. All I know is that FF 3.5.2 kicks the snot out of IE on 99.9% of the sites that I visit in speed. The only reason that I keep IE8 around is there are a few sites that don't behave with FF.

It's been downhill since 1.5. More leaky, more mem usage. Even on 3 gigs of RAM on my XP rig, after awhile I start seeing the effects. As soon as Chrome officially supports Adblock Plus & Video DownloadHelper, I'm bailin'!

really? mem usages been the same over atleast the last few versions. you shouldn't be seeing much memory creep esp if you already run stuff like adblock.
chrome feels laggy after a while thats for sure. and i'm not holding my breath for addons on chrome. i've been waiting for gestures forever for that browser.

Same here. I officially have not installed firefox on my new fresh OS install a few days ago! I tried fixing the problem but it really never went away. I was hoping it did. May try sooner or later one more time but not without making a image before hand.

Now all I have to do is decide which internet browser I want to keep Opera or SRWare Iron (Hate the Google updater you are forced to install I prefer to update things manually). SRWare Iron is very quick but has a lot less features than Opera. Definitely faster than Opera though but not by a whole lot. Bookmarks are so confusing to find though in SRWare Iron I found them though finally.

I wish there was some kind of magical way to fix Firefox from becoming sluggish and leaky after a while. So far have tried repeatedly to fix it. Nothing ever seems to work in the long term.

I installed a portable version on a flash drive, and set it to always browse in private mode (no caching). I could not believe how lightening fast it was. Compared to the old version of FF I was using on the flash drive it was like night & day. So I installed it on my home computer.....it seems like it hangs up on loading random sites for some reason. When it loads properly it loads obscenely fast...but if it hits a hiccup it just flat out stops.

Well, it doesn't close the Firefox window when its the last tab left anymore, but it still doesn't give me the little [X] until I have a second tab opened. Thanks anwyays.

<CTRL><W> will close the tab and as long as you have the above set, it won't close FF. Now you've given me something to do with my time for today (looking to keep the [X] alive.

lol I went back to the last version of firefox 2 and so far no memory leaks but I doubt I will keep it installed.

Way to risky. It is a whole lot faster and less bloated though!

You could also just middle click tabs to close them

yeah definitely try it. I turned off all caching. I'm basically in 'porn mode' on the portable one at all times.

Also in ie8. Close the tab that is middle clicked (whether it's the current one or not). Seems to work this way in ff3.52 also.

ctrl-alt-f4 closes all tabs except the current one in ie8.
