i keep a close tab button on the right side of the tab bar using tabmix plus. it lets you close the single tab in a window.

FF 3.5 at work on 32-bit XP has been no problem.

But good lord at home on 64-bit Vista it's a disaster and it got worse with 3.5.2. Here's what's been happening to me:

Playing videos on various websites like yahoo, cnbc is a total crapshoot. Sometimes FF will lockup after 20 seconds, other times it will play no problem. Sometimes I'll kill it restart and get the lockup again like 3-4 times in a row. Then it's smooth for the rest of the night. It's so damn annoying.

Sometimes I'll click the back button and it won't go back so I have to close the tab and reopen it. Some drop-down menus take repeated attempts to actually drop-down, very noticeable on yahoo.

And sometimes I'm not doing anything, I'll go away come back and click on a page and the whole thing turns grey and locks up and I have to kill it.

I mean seriously, how'd this crap get past QA? If they don't fix it in 3.5.3 I'm going back to 3.0. This is just ridiculous.

That is what I did went back to 3.0 but had tried 2.0 again because god it is so less bloated! I was worried staying with 2.0 though because of security.

Do you surf the same sites at work as you do at home with FF 3.5? I always wondered if it is a OS problem, hardware problem, or even a 32 vs 64 bit problem. Never got to experimenting testing out different OSes on my main machine here where I have all my problems. My older computer with only 512 MB of ram never seems to have any problems with firefox but it must use a 32 bit OS sense it is so old. Plus wouldn't make sense to go 64 bit, even if I could, with only 512 MB of ram of course. I may just not having any problems with firefox on my older machine because I don't use it to the full extent that I use firefox on my main machine. Even have all the same add ons installed on the older machine that is using firefox. The only problem with it is the speed. Very slow but that is to be expected on a machine this old. After I am done testing out firefox, which I am kinda doing with the older machine, I plan on using Opera sense it is so much faster on older hardware!

Jumping fuck on a stick is 3.5.2 slow. It seriously feels like I'm on a 56K modem from my home computer. SO sorry I upgraded. I'm rolling back to 3.0 tonight. This new version is just trash. EVERY site lags when loading.

I don't think it's an OS issue. It runs like piss on any machine I have it on. I'm using XP 32 bit, as are other machines I've tried it on. The only way I get it to run fast is by running it in private mode, with all forms of caching/history turned off.

Firefox (3.0-3.5) by far is the most troublesome piece of software that I use. My Firefox installation right now has gotten to the point where 1-2 times a day I have to restart it, many times I have to end the process. I'm not sure what's causing my issues, I'm not the type to install all kinds of unnecessary extensions. I only have about a dozen smallish ones installed.

So I'll go ahead and clean out the profile and start over like I always do. It'll run ok for a while but over time it will start screwing up and reach this stage again. It always does, ever since I started using it, around version 3.0.x. Unfortunately it's the only browser I can customize enough to my liking.

It's unfortunate everyone's having these problems. I use 3.5.2 with well over 35 extensions without issue.

But at the same time, I've always done clean installs with major releases.

You guys having problems should report them on the mozilla forums... maybe there will be some ideas/help there or at least they can work on it....

I doubt it. Been monitoring those forums and every time someone brings up these problems there they get the same run around answer with no solution for the problem.

Same with chrome. I've taken the time to report a couple of easily fixed problems about 10 versions ago. Not going to waste my time anymore.

Ad Muncher is even better!

It can be had for free as well legally though it is free for the first month to try out. Love the program because it doesn't just block ads and pop ups. It gets rid of those horrible ads inbetween pages like at rottentomatoes, imdb and so on. Even blocks ads on programs that are not even part of your browser.

Harvey's pdf suggestion helped my 3.5.2 a LOT. No complaints on 32 bit XP SP3. Using 124MB of memory just now with three windows open. Haven't seen it go above 150MB.

You might try a custom build of firefox 3.5.2 from either Tete (japanese but in english) or from Pigfoot. I don't know how much your milage may vary but I have used both and think they're just great.

Ok. Can I round up some people and sell tickets? I'll give you a cut...

Try noscript. In spite of its non-descript name, it's very useful - much more restrictive of questionable stuff than ad block. Kinda like a condom for browsing. Maybe they need some marketing help for their name - like "noscript minus"...

I imagine ad blocking plug-ins are hated by internet advertising businesses. You'll notice chrome doesn't have this capability nor the capability for a 3rd party to implement it.

Hmm, I've heard some bad news about NoScript, I believe it was posted by the creator of Adblock Plus interestingly enough. Or is that old news?

no i use no script.
and i use tons of tabs, and have through many firefox versions...and i don't remember my last crash.

the only bad thing about no script is that it can be user intensive at times.
u know..guess which bit to temporarily unblock to get a f#@king video to work etc. but i blame other sites for that.

I was referring to unscrupulous practices by the developer of NoScript, not that the program didn't seem to work well or do its job.

It's been months since I've even heard mention it, so it's possible that they've solved their grievances the diplomatic way. When I did see it, it had to do with intentional security issues that were being programmed into NS. All I can suggest is to give it a cursory google search. If I find a link when I get home, I'll post it.

The gist of the fiasco was that if both Noscript and Adblock Plus were installed, the noscript extension was coded to insert 'exception filters' into adblock so that when you visted the noscript homepage, the ads wouldn't be blocked.
