Firefox 39 Released

Add-ons are both a blessing and a curse. I have a couple that really make me like the browser (more than I did when I started using it), but when shopping I see plenty with reviewers stating how some are picky, need to be updated, don't work, or cause browser issues. It must be pretty easy to get these put out there.

I nuked the hard dive and did a clean reinstall of of Win XP SP3, Firefox 39 and Norton 360. Because my CPU chip, AthlonXP 3000+, does not support the SSE2 instruction set, I have to use alternate versions of Norton 360 and Toolbar. Win XP is completely updated and I ran Norton Live Update until it repeated that everything was current. At this point Norton Toolbar doesn't even show up in the Firefox Add-on list but it works fine in IE 8.
I get the impression there is some kind of bad blood between Firefox and Norton that has resulted in a lot of finger pointing and waiting for the other guy to own the problems of compatibility. At this point I'm throwing in the towel and moving on to more pressing problems.

Sorry about this. This could have been caused due to compatibility issues. Have you tried using an alternative browser like Internet Explorer or Chrome?

i hate IE8 as well which is why i use Google Chrome which is much more secure.

Try deleting the old Firefox profiles that get leftover.

Where would these profiles be located at?

Profiles are typically located here:

C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Default

where User is your computer user name ... you then look for your profile.

While muting sounds interesting, it would be better to turn off the tab's content's audio and video, if it launches itself. I don't like when you go to a site and a video starts playing on it own, before I decide if I even want to watch/listen. Any Firefox solutions for this? Btw, I don't have Flash installed.

Firefox used to have a pretty useful click-to-play feature for Flash. But Mozilla being Mozilla they broke it in Firefox 34 or so and there is no real fix for it. There are some addons like flashblock but they don't work quite right. There's no real solution for HTML5 video AFAIK other than turning it off completely.

I use click to play and it works pretty well. I did have to enable it in about:config in the very beginning though. What problem are you having?

firefox 39 was working quite well but recently having crashes so turned off hardware acceleration to see if that makes the difference.

I have hardware acceleration turned off as well, and get the once in a while crash when exiting Firefox. I think it has to do with when Shockwave or Flash have been used, as it seems that when Plugin Container has been opened, it takes Firefox a very, very long time to close, which in turn brings up the Crash Reporter. Firefox is not crashing while it is running. I am thinking about simply renaming Crash Reporter, that way Firefox won't be able to find it and you will not see the crash screen come up.

FF just released an update taking it to 39.0.3 but I cannot tell you anything about it other than I just updated my browser. I hope that it addresses the crashing that has been occurring.

Mine tried to update from within Firefox but it failed. Had to manually download and run the installer, but it is now at 39.0.3 .. so far, all good.
