Browser speed is over rated.

It's takes more time for the server to dish up the web page at certain times during the day so the speed difference is irrelevant. I like Firefox because of the features and it continues to improve. Chrome is fast but bland.

Anyone getting a lot of hard drive thrashing with this beta ?
It seems the HD is doing about 30 writes/reads every time I load a page.

edit:
It is worse than I thought. After running procmon on firefox it is performing between 2000- 3000 drive I/O request for each page load.
Most of them are related to sqlite they are using.

I haven't had any crashes, but these IBM ads on the top, left side, and bottom of the AT forum pages are slowing my Firefox to a crawl. Once they appear, I can't click anything or scroll the page for another 10-15 seconds. Doesn't firefox run flash in another thread? or is firefox and plugins strictly single-threaded?

I'm having two problems with FF4beta4. "Phantom" tabs. When I close a tab, open a few other tabs, and then close them, the original tab pops back up.

One time, I closed that tab, and then clicking the "new tab" button, changed the URL bar back to that web site, and the page was still there. Clicking around some more, my only tab visible on the tab bar (AT forums) disappeared mysteriously, and all I had left was a non-functioning new tab button in the tab bar, and the phantom website was still there.

Granted, I was still downloading a file off of that web page, but still, why won't FF let go of that page once I close the tab? And losing my existing tab was a major glitch.

Another problem that I've had is that Hotmail doesn't work with FF 4. I can login to MS Live/Hotmail, but when I click on inbox, I cannot click on any messages to look at them. Seems like a JavaScript glitch.

Whether this is because Hotmail doesn't recognize FF4 yet, or whether FF4's new JS engine is b0rked, I don't know.

Edit: Actually, my problem was with FF4beta3. I updated to FF4beta4 a little while ago, and I just tried Hotmail, and it worked this time.

Edit: Wierd. On the Win7 taskbar, with the mouse-over window preview, the two missing tabs that I lost were still there, just not on my tab bar. Clicking those windows brought them back onto my tab bar. I've also had other times, when the Win7 taskbar totally lost the mouse-over preview of my tab windows, although they were still on my tab bar, I couldn't mouse-over and open them.

After checking with the development site and bug list there are caching issues with the beta. That is what was causing all my disk access, it was literally doing 1000+ IO request on a page load. The problem is how it is determining what has already been cached on disk and what has not. They are working on a fix to this that will speed it up and also increase on disk cache dynamically depending on what resources are available as well as controlling when it is flushed better.

Right now the only way to make it stop using the drive so much is to disable caching of sites /cookies/etc completely and that will still not eliminate it making about 100 registry request per load.

not seeing much difference speed wise over 3.6.8, what is supposed to be the improvement with this?

I was going to try the latest beta version of Firefox 4 but if there is not much of speed difference then I think I will stick to Opera 10.61 which I installed yesterday and is so much faster then my old Firefox 3.6.8 which gave me a few annoying little issues.

Anyway keep us updated as I'm very much interested in the feedback from you guys on Firefox 4 beta.

plus you need to do this also for more speed - Under windows 7 you can enable direct2d and directwrite to make use of the gpu in html5 video and other sites. Also improves speed quite a bit.

To enable D2D and DW support in Mozilla Minefield:

* Point your web browser to: about:config
* Agree to the warning message if presented
* Search for value: gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.enabled
* Set gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.enabled to true (left click it)
* Search for value: mozilla.widget.render-mode
* Set mozilla.widget.render-mode to 6
* Restart Minefield

Its not bad,speed is nice and faster then 3.6.8 , plus in some ways similar to Opera which I would say still has the edge on speed.

I'll probably wait until the final version is released before considering to use it as my main browser.
