i am not sure because i only used opera 12 for a short amount of time. opera 31 is very fast though and will take me ages to get used to it.

I still don't like Opera31 since too many missing features etc, Vivaldi is worth trying out, still a preview tech build but looking to be what Opera should of stuck with.

I did try it out and it looks promising, still needs more polish but has virtually all the features from the old Opera 12.

i have as well but can't put it down to what could be causing it and i used to think that it was a flash problem but some sites which have been crashing i don't think use flash. does anandtech use flash because it's here thet has crashed and ebay uses flash for some things and that has crashed.

I don't believe that I've had any crashes here at AT with ff. Most of my problems seem to occur after accessing a site using google.

I'm having issues with Waterfox 40.0.2 bogging down. CPU usage does go to 56% on my dual-core G3258 (4.2Ghz) when switching tabs. However, it takes approx 1.5 seconds to switch tabs (already loaded tabs, no Flash / video content).

I don't understand why a 4.2Ghz Haswell Pentium dual-core, with 8GB of RAM (2.84GB used), and a 7950 3GB video card, can't switch tabs "instantly". This lag is annoying.

I've noticed it on my other machine, too. It seems to be something with Firefox / Waterfox 40.0.2.

Interestingly, it appears to peak CPU usage at over 100% of one core, so maybe it's now a bit threaded?

Edit: I restarted Waterfox, now CPU usage stays at pretty-much zero, when switching tabs, and it's close to "instant".

Weird "funk" that Waterfox gets into when it has been open for a while. Strange that the high CPU usage only shows when switching tabs.

Running any extensions? If so, maybe you have an incompatible one or one with a memory leak.

Just wanted to mention a new extension I'm enjoying called uMatrix... it allows customized blocking of website functionality in a way I find much more enjoyable than noscript. I can blacklist all scripts or other content and with a simple click whitelist certain sites and it will remember my decision without nagging or other intrusive behavior. With the recent advent of javascript overlays I wanted to find a way to basically shut them all down when doing random searching and this is the best way I've found so far. That combined with killing autostarting videos will let me take back my browsing experience and choose to give ad revenue only to the sites I use the most by occasionally going into Edge, going to the site, and clicking on every ad I see. All that's left now are the slideshow pages which represents probably 2/3 of them where you have to click through 12 pages to view what you want... will just have to avoid em.

The difference between these two things is that what I was referring to in my post was the built in sandboxing/defense in depth stuff in Chrome where everything is designed to work together from the start. Protected mode for flash in Firefox is something of a workaround due to the fact that Firefox has no native sandboxing for plugins (or anything really). There's no reason it can't work well but they may not want to invest the time into it to ensure this so I would look at those issues as a bug, not as an issue inherent with the sandboxing or mitigation technologies. I've never had issues with protected mode flash when I rarely use Firefox.

So to amend my original statement, sandboxing and defense in depth done right has little overhead and should not affect the user experience.

Also what's this about:
Anandtech forums (slower loading)
Do these forums even use Flash for anything? I can only assume it's because of some ad which uses Flash in which case it's ironic that protected mode has to be disabled.

The only flash I see on this site is ads. But I use Ublock so no ads. LOL

And there are 6 scripts that run on this site including Anandtech's.
