One of the announcements I read said 52ESR would still run on XP.Well, for my XP box Firefox 52 is a no go. I may consider the last ESR version of Firefox, if it will still allow unsigned addons to be used.

New releases are an "I wonder what I'm losing this time" thing. I'm not ready to switch yet, but am reserving judgment for the 57 release where everything goes to hell. Firefox is definitely slower than Chromium, but the extensive addons make up for the lack of speed. Take those away, and there's only philosophical reasons to stay, and philosophy only takes you so far...One of the announcements I read said 52ESR would still run on XP.
I think I'm giving up on Firefox though. First Firebug quit development over changing extension requirements. Now Gmail's calling won't work without the plugin. So I'm moving to Chromium. It seems to be faster too.

You might like to try uBlock origin(adblocker), and uMatrix(kind of a NoScript thing). I like ublock on firefox, and chromium is the primary development target, so it should be better if anything. I've *just* downloaded umatrix, so I'm not familiar, but it has a good reputation amongst technically oriented users. Both are also libre software, which I appreciate, and use /almost/ exclusively. A proprietary program has to be pretty special to get me to use it.That's the trick, finding all your extensions in Chromium. Here's what I've found so far:
Firefox -> Chromium
CookieSafe -> Vanilla
GreaseMonkey -> TamperMonkey
NoScript -> ScriptSafe
Stylish -> Stylish
AdBlock -> AdBlock
FoxyProxy -> FoxyProxy
Privacy Badger -> Privacy Badger
HTTPS Everywhere -> HTTPS Everywhere
Firebug (obsolete ) -> none (but the developer tools plus Live CSS Editor do a lot.)
FireFinder (obsolete ) -> $$('object') in Console
Tab Mix Plus -> None ;( (so far)
starting with Firefox 53 (slated for release on April 18), non-WebExtensions add-ons will no longer be accepted for signing / display on Mozilla's add-on site

According to Justin Hindman, Stylish's new owner as of October 2016, the add-on will share anonymized user data with SimilarWeb, a company that provides data analytics and market insight for various online services.
No, I didn't. I didn't even know add-ons could do that. Looks like there might be an opt-out: https://userstyles.org/login/policyDid you know Stylish was bought out by a new company
I use StyleRRR now.
