Ok,
I am not a pro, let's get that out of the way. Something's wrong with my DNS settings so I can't access google or gmail or a few other sites with either firefox or ie. I went through several different things to try to fix it. ipconfig /flushdns is giving me an error and i'm honestly not sure why. i even tried to mimic my DNS settings to my roommates (live in an on-campus apartment) and nothing. another site said to manually enter info but another thread on here said i shouldn't have to. since this site is set to send email to my gmail account and i can't get to that, i can get email at sacredfeminine81@yahoo.com...i'd appreciate any info you guys can give me. thx.

You can get to other sites though?
Can you ping google?
Have you ran any spyware/antivirus tests?

And you can access these sites from your friends computer?

i thought it was spyware or a virus at first but everything came out clean...i can get to other sites with the occasional timeout...i don't know how to ping google...and yes i can access the sites from the other computer....

i ran those commands and i already had winsockfix and neither of those worked after i rebooted...it's like banging my head against a wall.

Boot into safe mode with networking support and try again (press f8 while booting to get to the safe mode options list).

To ping bring up a command prompt and type png www.google.com
If you can ping google then run a trace route, from the command prompt tracert www.google.com

Ok...it is only working some of the time. When I pinged google, it said that packets sent = 4, received = 0....100% loss. I did the trace anyway, and all 30 times, it timed out. I don't even understand what that means but obviously my computer isn't communicating with google.com

If the ipconfig /flushdns returned an error, then I suspect your netcard driver. Post the error message and then re-install the drivers. Let us know how it goes.

It times out the whole 30 tries or "hops"...I'm not familiar with what that means but that is what it is says.

When I tried the flush, the error said: Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: function failed during execution. Here's where I show my ignorant colors...netcard driver? Like...my internal ethernet card? I just updated all of my drivers 2 days ago because a friend thought it would help...perhaps I missed one?

If you are able to access other sites except for the ones you mentioned, then yes, it is possible you have a dns problem. Here are some very basic troubleshooting steps to follow.

Make sure your netcard has a link light. If you are on a college network, then there is not much you can do if they have a problem. Scan for viruses, adware, spyware and make sure to completely un-install and then re-install your netcard drivers. If you have Windows XP, then try the repair option for your network connection and make sure you have DHCP enabled. Get to a command prompt and type "services.msc" and then restart the DHCP service.

If you do not have Windows XP, the you can go to a command prompt and try
"ipconfig /flushdns" then
"ipconfig /renew" then
"ipconfig /registerdns"
If DNS is registered, then you can type in "nslookup"
From here, you should have a ">" symbol at your prompt. Type in "www.google.com" and it should resolve the address along with the information of the DNS server. If it does not resolve, you definitely have a problem with DNS.
If only gmail and google are not resolving, then there may be a policy in place by the IT department of your school. Give us a little more info so that we may help you troubleshoot. Good luck.
