Firefox is starting to annoy the crap out of me

I was completely happy with firefox until I upgraded to the new 1.0.2 version.

Found it slightly annoying that I double click on the ff shortcut and bring up this. Can't do anything with it other than x it out and then click again which lets me surf or else click on the update button which tells me that there are no updates. Slightly annoying but I can live with it.

Found out 2 days ago that I can only run one instance of firefox. I can click on the shortcut and it acts like it wants to bring up another instance but nada...File, new window has the same behavior....ok this will not work

I don't know....so I try a reinstall of ff....no change

Install java 1.4.2....no change

Reinstall ff again no change....cept now I can't even post a reply on AT....(using IE now)

Any ideas?

XP SP2, Firefox 1.0.2, java sdk sun 1.4.2, plenty of hardware resources...


*update can't even get into my yahoo mail now, displays a blank page and done after I log in, refresh displays a blank page.

Just FYI there is a newer Java out now. If you don't want to use IE, try this:

1) uninstall Firefox

2) enable viewing of hidden, system and protected-OS files/folders

3) go to C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\ directory

4) search it for anything with "firefox" or "mozilla", and make sure the search is including hidden/system/protected stuff. Delete the directories it finds so you've got the old stuff cleaned out good.

5) now reinstall FF102 and see if it does better?

I'd definitely install the new java 5.0, should help you out... http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_xpi.jsp

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox is what you want to delete. You can grab the bookmarks.html file from inside there to keep those around for after you reinstall.

If you think java is part of the problem, you may as well just remove it completely until you get a good install running. Unless you need it for something else, that is.

Or you can try Opera, won't have any problems doing any of that. Java comes with the installation.

Thanks for the link, downloaded it.

Uninstalling firefox completely then putting it back on seems to have worked. If anything else breaks I will put on the new java....I'm not too big of a fan of 1.4.2

Seriously? I poked around for a bit where I have it installed and I didn't see anything. I wouldn't want a browser installing it's own jre or telling me which version to use. Or does it only do it if you don't already have at least one jre installed?
