let me start of by saying this: i love firefox. but not like in a "its a great browser" sort of way. i LOVE it. i love the tabbed browsing, i love the open sourcyness, i love the extensions (adblock ftw to stop those gay ass flash ads - oh and mouse gestures ).

now here's the thing. right now i have four tabs open, 3 anandtech and one genmay. thats all. guess how much memory its taking up. heres the answer:

142mb

thats not right. on start up its fine, but it doesnt properly take things out of memory, and that is just causing problems... i have 2 gigs of ram, so its not a big problem. sometimes, like with azureus, i can justify it. but when, for example, i have something else open in ffx (flash, movie, etc.), or maybe 2 windows with 4 or 5 tabs each, the memory is just rediculous.

so now i am asking for a new browser. a browser that has a similar feel; that can have mouse gestures or something similar to it, maybe even an adblock. i know open source is a long shot, but maybe that too. does opera fit any of those? how is it in memory usage?

IE7 Beta 2. Granted, memory usage isn't that great with this either. Also, this is being posted using IE7 Beta 2

Opera is free so just try and see if you like it. I'm just amused that you can tolerate Azureus which is both a CPU and RAM hog? You've got 2 gigs of RAM so use it for goodness sakes!

If you have 2GB of memory then why do you care your browser is using 8% of that? Anyways, give Opera and IE7 a try then.

In any case, Firefox's usage of RAM won't ever matter when you have 2GB, especially considering that you're not playing a game at the same time. You're just being paranoid about it. And this is from someone using Opera.

Opera has mouse gestures and if you use Windows, Proxomitron can be a great ad-blocker for any browser.

I have 512MB of RAM and never have any problems. Firefox is holding at 85MB and it's been open for 8++ hours. You just need to know how to use the about:config options.

I love Firefox, but IE7 will probably kick it's butt up and down the court once Microsoft finishes working out the bugs. Microsoft probably as 10x as many programmers working on IE 7 than Firefox, Opera, and Safari have combined. There's no way IE7 can fail.

10x more likely to make mistakes, then.

Because in any game where you would actively switch between the game and Firefox, the amount of memory that FF uses won't matter when you have 2GB of RAM. I'm talking about something like Guild Wars or WoW.

In any other game, it won't matter period because there's no good reason to be switching back and forth while playing something like CS:S or FEAR or whatever.

Heck, use FRAPS and benchmark with and without FF on. You won't see any significant difference.

So I'll repeat, why does it matter? I could see the person with 256 or 512 complaining about this but not the person with 2GB. Even when I am running games like WoW or FFXI I use firefox with no slowdown at all.

Also, many times there is a balance between memory usage and speed. The more stuff in memory the faster you are since you can access it faster.

So how is this any different than any other version of IE?

When you're gaming, the NT VM manager will swap out FireFox's memory to free it up for your game. This is called paging.

1) Grab the latest firefox 1.5.0.3
2) Check out this link
3) Then check out this link

Not perfect, but it should help. Also, make sure you're not running like 20 extensions.. It could be buggy extensions or the fact that noobs keep installing them even if they don't use them..

The instance of Firefox that I have open right now is using 65,188 K of RAM. Before I closed the last instance, I check the process list, and noticed that Firefox was using somewhere in the 8x,xxx K range. Not that big of a deal. I had 10 tabs open, 6 of them were graphically intensive, 2 of them used javascript heavily, 2 of them were forums.

The only time I ever see Firefox creep up over 10x,xxx K is when I'm running a Java app within Firefox. I've yet to ever see my install of Firefox go above 12x,xxx.

You know, I think how much ram is allocated to it might depend on how much ram you have. I never used to have high usage for firefox, but now that I moved from 512 to 2GB, it's taking 100MB.

how many years old now and still the least secure of any browser and most exploitable???
the only thing IE6 has on anyone is that streaming video with WMP works...

that is flat out the ONLY reason to use IE6 for anything other than windows update..

You know, I bet you're right. I don't recall it taking as much as it does now, when I was on 512. I'm running 1GB now.
