opera rocks. i am using it right now. the 9 beta also has built in torrent and content blocker. (and now you'll say, well so does ff, through addons.) opera is self-contained, only 4MB install. i have like, 10-15 tabs open and it is using 19,504K now. at peak, i've seen it take maybe 53. never 142. they also invented tabs. anyway, it's free. download it and give it a try.

I'm using Avant Browser with 5 tabs (one is a powerpoint slideshow) and it's only using 56,772K. Avant supports tabs, mouse gestures, popup blocking AND ad blocking! Yeah it's an IE6 shell but it KICKS ASS

I agree with the people saying that Firefox takes more memory in systems that have extra memory. I think it makes sense to take up a little more RAM if you see more than a gig of free RAM .. and speed up things a little.
I've noticed firefox taking up more memory on my desktop (2GB) than my laptop (1GB)

I suggest running firefox in safe mode without any plugins running and visiting various sites. If ff's memory useage is normal then restart in safe mode again and enable one plugin at a time and test it out by visiting various websites.

Right now I have five firefox windows open with two of the windows containing between 6 and 12 tabbed windows and my memory useage is at 103MB.

The only extensions I have installed are: ieview, dictionary search, adblock, view source chart, firefox showcase, filterset g updater. I'm running with 1GB of memory.

Not perfect, but it should help. Also, make sure you're not running like 20 extensions.. It could be buggy extensions or the fact that noobs keep installing them even if they don't use them..

Yeah, I'd like to recommend you try #2 also, I did that and now firefox takes so little memory

I can't stand that it's a big fat pig either.. I dropped IE for FF (because it's not extensible) and now I've dropped FF for Opera (because it's got 99% of what I used FF for and it's not a big fat pig). Best move ever.

Does FF or opera have the "auto-hide" feature for tool bars?
So full screen is all full screen? I think I remember opera having it but to show the tabs again you need to right clcik and get out of full screen mode.

now here's the thing. right now i have four tabs open, 3 anandtech and one genmay. thats all. guess how much memory its taking up. heres the answer:

142mb

thats not right. on start up its fine, but it doesnt properly take things out of memory, and that is just causing problems... i have 2 gigs of ram, so its not a big problem. sometimes, like with azureus, i can justify it. but when, for example, i have something else open in ffx (flash, movie, etc.), or maybe 2 windows with 4 or 5 tabs each, the memory is just rediculous.

so now i am asking for a new browser. a browser that has a similar feel; that can have mouse gestures or something similar to it, maybe even an adblock. i know open source is a long shot, but maybe that too. does opera fit any of those? how is it in memory usage?

holy crap, what are you whining about, you have 2 gigs of ram???

firefox is designed to make maximal use of the memory you have installed. if you only had 1 gig of ram, it would use much less.

the thing is, you get better page caching with more RAM, and firefox takes advantage of that so you can press the back button 10 times and each page will load instantly.

on the other hand, with less ram usage you get less caching and less features. i think there is also a value you can change that affects memory caching if you really care about that measley amount of memory usage.
