This thread has shown that some people don't get it.

Yes, advertisers are beginning to find ways around the blocker. Yes, it's being worked on. But you should use Adblock anyway.

And there is NO SPYWARE yet for Firefox that has broken the mechanisms in place to protect the user. How does it install itself? ActiveX? Can't. XPI file? Only XPIs from mozilla.org are installable by default.

FUD FUD FUD FUD, quoth the troll.

Yeah, it does. I personally disagree with the secretive approach of hiding discovered exploits until a release is ready, but then again, even if they did release security updates ASAP, there are lusers like my roommate, who doesn't even see the update notification by the throbber.

But I digress. The problem is not yet malware, which was the claim of a previous poster. And it's not doom and gloom like the thread starter is saying.

What exploit is it? Is it the Sun Java one (although that has a user prompt I think)?

Quick aside here - ok, so the little update thingy popped up for me once, but I didn't click on it right away. How do I find out what it said now? Where's the "Update" section in Firefox? I only know of the Update button in the Extensions window, with the annoying "feature" of making you click Update for every single extension - it doesn't check them all at once.

OP - try Firefox 1.01? I get a popup maybe once a week on Firefox.

Tools-Options-Advanced, look for Software Updates.

wronge, there is adware that CAN get around IE/Firefox. Try installing bearshare or anything else with adware (not spyware).

Installing adware yourself is different than it getting around the browser.

FF doesn't check for extension updates automatically anymore? Make sure you have both boxes checked under the "Software Update" section in the Advanced section of the options menu.
