I stopped by the Albuquerque store at lunch today. They were in the process of moving some of the furniture out of the back office & tagging it (file cabinets for $20, etc.). Most of what they had left were boxed merchandise, still at the standard 15% off, along with selected items (mostly networking, RAM, & accessories) for less.

I ended up spending $140 for a couple of cables, 256M DDR for my laptop, and a 15" LCD (the last in the store). I may be heading back later for the chairs from their training room (good office chairs, $20/each).

Well,

They may have 40 billion in assets which I douht and they may be selling Emachines at walmart but anyone who buys an Emachine is buying because of the price and not the computer. I used to work at BestBuy and we had folks come in and buy the ad Emachine which was like $299 after rebates and they had no clue what they were getting or cared. These same folks are the ones who called every damn day asking questions and asking why is doesn't work and why does it take so long to get fixed. Packerd Bell was the largest PC manufacture at one time but their terrible quality drove them to their doom. I don't think the gateway legacy is on any more solid ground then they were before and they will now compete more directly with dell and we all know Dell will stomp them. It's not like I really care if they make it because I'm a Mac guy and hate PC's but I was perfectly willing to go to Gateway and pick up any deal I could find.

I know I look like a leech, but I have went back to our only Gateway store every day since Sunday, and I have asked them about the 15 inch DVI LCD screens that they have been using for their cash registers. Each time, someone tells me, "they do not know yet".
Those are the only things that I want. There was a 512 meg PC133 ram chip sitting there and they never could find the discount for it, and I asked about it each time I came into the store and each time they would try to look it up and they would flat out tell me, $200.00. I went today and it was gone... I know no one in their right mind paid $200.00 for a 512 meg PC133 ram chip, which makes me mad...

I am on those DVI LCD's as soon as they say "yeah we will sell them for $50.00 a piece".

I'm contemplating wheter it's worth the gas to drive out to the store. I don't expect to find anything spectacular, but who knows.

I want to score a new laptop.

They said they cant sell display models of their computers, because of software licenseing.

I hope they give liek a 50% off new unopened computers that they still have in stock.

My store said they had 3 of the M300x or 500 series laptop( Centrino 1.4Ghz)

Local store had about a dozen laptops, and a dozen desktops. All for 15%. I'll check back only if you guys here throw a better percentage out there. But I thought the stores were closing on the 9th? Anyway, a bunch of external drives, a bunch of different printers, and a largish stack of 15" LCDs. Those were for 275 - 15%. I wasn't impressed.

It is only like a ten minute drive from my work to our local store. We have a couple major streets here, and my office is on one major street, and the store is on the next one over.

I have been driving back and forth to the store since Sunday. Hopefully my persistance, in Jesus name, will pay off.
I drive a 04 Altima SL, and am amazed that I am still on the same tank of gas that I filled up on, last Monday. I am hoping they will let some of those 3 year old LCD's that they had been using for the cash register system, go for real cheap.

EMachines has actually improved thier quality now that they have some cash to work with. Truthfully, all the HP's, EMachines, SONY's, etc are pretty much the same computer due to all the standardization of PC components (they all use off the shelf motherboards, hard drives, CD ROMs, etc). The only real difference is the build quality of the cases and the keyboard/mouse quality.

I worked at a Gateway store in Ohio on Saturday when they had the clearance sales. I was scheduled at noon so that is when I came in ... I found out at noon how cheap everything was going for and that most of the TVs had already been sold. I think Gateway should have given us an hour before the store opened to have our chance at whatever we wanted because when I got there at noon there were tons of people there and I had to help the customers ... at our store we still put forth the effort to help the customer, but after awhile if I was helping a customer and they find a good deal ... I scoop up another of the same item if we had it. Most of our plasmas had already been sold to employees in our Cincinnati store. If I had known the deals ahead of time I would've bought a plasma. I enjoyed my time at Gateway but they should've done more for us at the end.

enddogg, is it true that some stores that sold new items for display prices will be punished by losing their severance packages ?

when I inquired about their final date of closing they said "April 9th" so if that means they are DONE on the 9th or 9th will be their last day I don't know I will ask again today.

They've threatedned w/several things. We were told we could wear jeans and tennis shoes to work and then on a conference call I heard them telling the managers that we could lose our severance if we didn't go by the dress code until the end of the week.

Stores will be open today, and tomorrow, and never again after that.. 8pm Friday night is it for all the stores. Employees will be there the week after but only to tear down and box up stuff to send back and empty the store out. They probably won't be too friendly to customers trying to get in and buy something

I just got back from the Cranston RI store and the pickings are getting slim. I still got a couple great deals though. I picked up the 30GB Creative Zen for $115 and the JVC GR-DVL820u Mini-DV for about $250! I am a happy camper

But here in Kentucky, our tax is only 6%
Plus the company I work for gets an additional 5% through gateway.
So I could get a 42 inch Plasma Screen for about 20% off....

20% off of $2399.99 before taxes is $1919.99 +$115.19 in taxes, comes out to about $2035.18

20% off of the taxed $2399.99 which at 6% is $2543.98 is still $2035.18

To the average consumer.... that is a pretty good price...

But the average consumer does not know that they only have a resolution over about 852x600... which is only SVGA....

BTW the 42 inch Plasma Displays are $2399.99 here...

You should really get your facts straight before spewing these untruths. Do you own or have you ever seen a properly calibrated ED plasma? Have you ever watched HD or DVD content on an ED plasma? It is stunning and almost indistinguishable from an HD set. Where do you get this crap about them not having good color? And where is this information stating LCD's will be cheaper than plasma in the next few months, or when EOD or any of the other tech will be in mass production soon? I expect your next post will tell us how plasma's are not a good investment because they need to be refilled every other year at $300 a pop.

This doesn't mean I am recommending that people buy the gateway plasma as they are known to be some of the worst on the market.

And so I went to the experts.
When I mentioned the life expectancy of plasma TV's, I had read somewhere that they die, ie have permanent burn-out or loose brightness in 5 years.

I found a couple of nice threads on the AVS forum arguing the pro's and con's of plasma tv issues.
This one here, talks of someone watching only 4:3 content and thusly burning out his Plasma TV. That is really sort of a moot point because of the content he was watching. When all was said and done, the main characters within the thread, all agreed that you cannot treat a plasma TV as you would a regular TV. You have to watch what you watch, when you watch it.

I also went here, for some more info...

As for the newer technology.... I got it mixed up, it is Intel LCOS Displays that Intel has produced and manufacturers should be bringing to the market, sometime this year as mentioned

here.

Hope this answers your questions...

I was in there on Day 1 of the Firesale and it was already pretty barren. They had a ton of CRT monitors but I don't need one, and even at about 30% off I didn't want to mess around with the LCD monitors. A lot of misc accessories were marked way down, but I noticed even after 50% off their prices still were about average.

Finish Line in the Galleria is having a huge sale, swing in if you need sports stuff. The women's boutique right by Fresno's is closing down, girlfriend bought some pretty scandalous clothing for next to nothing. Speaking of, Fresno's its ladies night tonight free drinks from 8-10 for ladies.

I finally got around to getting to the Reno store this afternoon, and it wasn't exactly empty. I picked up a
USB / serial adapter that I've been needing for $10, and looked over the DVI and digital camera selection.
One of the better deals I saw was a 5.0 MP digital camera, Gateway brand for $119. Looked decent, but
I could not use one. If there is anyone in Reno reading, you might want to take a look over what is left
before they close tomorrow... Still have a number of printers and lots of odds and ends, like system memory
amd notebook accessories..

Went today to the local Gateway. The best I could find was $134 for a HP 450Ci travel printer (regular $300, cheapest I could find online is $220). Anyone know if it's a good printer? I'm kinda looking for one and they have 4 left, but tomorrows the last day. Choices, choices...

I also picked up a $30 Logitech Wingman gamepad for $11.
