I just heard it on the local news that Gateway will close all of its stores. They will start to get rid of the inventories at these stores starting this Saturday. Time to camp out at these stores for good deals

No, this isn't a joke. Gateway recently acquired eMachines. The Gateway CEO is stepping into the Chairman role and the eMachine's CEO is taking over as the new CEO. But that's not the important part; the important part is that Gateway is closing all 188 of its stores.

BUT (and there's always a but)

That doesn't necessarily mean everything will be madd cheap. I mean, the stores are closing, but the company isn't going out of business. You know what I mean?

Yeah, and last time I was in a gateway store they didn't have much on hand to begin with... Unless you wanted that computer with the plexiglass side and was bolted down to the counter. Maybe you could get a really nice Gateway Banner if you were into that...

Good Luck.

"They will probably sell the store inventories to Hilco/Great American Group.
Who will then close the stores for a few days and mark up all the products 2 to 3 times the current price, then put a 25% liquidation markdown on everything. There will be huge lines to get in to all of the stores. They will sell more product the first day than Gateway has sold in the past 5 years. "

that is very true

I work for the advertising agencythat Gateway hired (Starcom Mediavest/part of Leo Burnett/ part of Publicis Groupe)and received a memo yesterday with what was going on. Here is the skinny. The stores do not turn a profit so they have to shut them down. All inventory will be shipped back to the warehouse for distribution on their site. Any display products will be sold, or shipped back to the warehouse and dicsounted for sale on their website. It is going to be like the recent Circuit City store closures. Hope this info spells it clearly for you.

From the AP Press Release:

The company moved its headquarters to the San Diego area six years ago. About 550 of its 6,500 workers are based at its headquarters. At the end of 2002, the company had 11,500 employees, and in 2000 it had 25,000.

The Gateway stores will all close on the same day. Spokesman David Hallisey said it was still unclear how the company would deal with its stores' inventory. Gateway plans to continue selling its products over the Internet and by phone.

So, no blowout sales are planned right now...they're probably just put everything back in their warehouse (at least that's the feeling I get).

Bummer, unless there's more info, this deal's pretty much dead. (After all, who wants a computer that every child/baby in the city has slobbered/beat up? Besides that, the employees probably already bought/"bought" anything worth buying.

The morale at that place has been pretty low for a while and the employees have little opportunity for transfers elsewhere in the organization. So they will loot anything that isn't nailed down (heck their managers are getting fired too)

You can bet that not much makes it back to the warehouse for re-sale

Funny I just got an Email from Gateway:

Hi. I'm Ted Waitt, co-founder and chairman of Gateway, Inc.

We really appreciate your business, and I want to let you know about some changes we're making.

You may be aware that Gateway recently acquired eMachines, Inc., making us the third-largest PC maker in the U.S. This is a development we're really excited about and I'm pleased to let you know that eMachines' CEO, Wayne Inouye, has become Gateway's new CEO while I'll continue to remain actively involved as chairman. During his time at eMachines, Wayne developed an incredible reputation among customers and within the PC industry, evidenced by a recent PC World report that gave eMachines the number one spot on several reliability and service measures.

So what does this mean for you, the Gateway customer?

There are still a lot of details we need to work out as part of the merger, but basically, you can expect even better prices across a wider line of exciting new technology products and services, from low cost eMachines PCs to Gateway's best selling Plasma TV and award-winning line of digital cameras, mp3 players, home theater products, and more. And more places to buy those products too.

As part of Gateway's new direction, we've also made the difficult decision to close our 188 Gateway stores across the nation. Our stores have been a source of pride for Gateway since the mid-'90s, but despite enormous effort we haven't been able to run them profitably. And we believe that our customers will be served very well by the increasing availability of our products, as well as through our existing phone and Web outlets (1-800-Gateway and www.gateway.com).

My pledge to you is that you'll continue to have ?a friend in the business? in Gateway. I think you'll find that our Web and phone sales teams are the best in the industry. When we started this company nearly 20 years ago, our goal was to offer products directly to the customer, providing them with the best value for their money and unparalleled service and support. We remain committed to the very same principles today.

If you've used one of our retail service centers, rest assured you can count on the same friendly and knowledgeable service you've been getting at your store by utilizing our other service and support options. To see a full listing of our customer care options, please visit support.gateway.com.

Gateway is a solid company and the acquisition of eMachines - and the many growth opportunities it presents - means we'll become even stronger going forward. As we grow, we look forward to continuing to serve your technology needs for a long, long time to come.
Sincerely,

Ted Waitt

I knew when I saw the gateway country store open in town that it was an idiotic idea. I'm sure they lost a boat-load of money by investing in all that space, hiring all those people and spending all kinds of resources on stores with such a limited focus. Electronics retail has been moving towards a walmart style, "sell everything with anything remotely to do with electronics" idea, and they expected to make money just selling computers. So, instead of investing in production, marketing, or the supply chain they threw away money hand over fist and took on a moronic idea. They just got bloated.

Their display models used to have neat clear plexiglass sides on them... wonder if they'd give 'em away or sell or just throw out.
