What would the performance difference be (if any) if you had four IDE drives in firewire boxes compared to four IDE drives attached to the primary and secondary IDE channels of your computer?

Just out of curiosity, wouldn't having firewire hard drives be equivalent of Serial ATA?

Firewire= 480Mbps = 60 MB/s

IDE
Ata133= 133 MB/s
Serial ATA= 150 MB/s

These are max burst transfer rates, but with 4 drives you definately get better performance using IDE drives.

NO!!!

Just did some research myself and you're right, firewire doesn't hold a candle to IDE.

But it sure saves me from having to crack open my computer case

It's a IDE or SCSI drive in a external enclosure that plugs into a FireWire port. And no it can't hold a light to SATA.

Firewall hard drives (don't know whether they are currently sold yet) were described in a story posted over a year ago, as having the read heads and the write heads as both electrically and physically separate. So used as a web server, would be impossible to hack. A Japanese professor/scientist was the author.

I think I remember reading that paper, however I'm 98% sure that the drive(s) were never created (at least not mass produced).
