Just bought one for my second computer, should be Windows XP compatible.

Linky

The HK speaker looks pretty cool too, it's huge though.
Wireless Optical mouse for $19.99.
16X DVD-ROM drive for $39.99 after rebate.

I bought the no-brand 32X CDR last week and have no problem burning them at 40X.

UPDATE- Sold out in Santa Clara....

>>Cold deal, since there's no MicroCenter in OK<<

That doesn't make it a cold deal for some of us.

If your computer is running Win ME, 2000, or XP, it should detect firewire automatically. If you are running Win98 or 95, chances are slim since you would need the driver from the card that in many occasions, it wouldn't work that well. By the way, Actiontec has had very bad reviews for its firewire card. I got one for free last year from Circuitcity. From my experience, chipset does matter and you should go for the reputable one such as Texas Instrument.

Should.

Operating System: Windows98, Windows 98 SE, Windows 2000, Windows ME

There are drivers available on the product link for download....good luck!

Far as computer compatibility.....you will not get full benifit of 400mb/s firewire as your system cannot likely process the info that quickly, but if your board is Plug n' Play (Pnp), you should be fine.

OK, a quick report card on it:

Runs prefectly fine under XP, no driver needed.
Shows as OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller.

Comes with a firewire cable, Y power cable.

3 external connectors and one internal one.

2 CDROMs - driver and VideoWaver III SE.

Pretty good value for $15 I must say.

This is the lowest quality firewire card I have ever seen. You must plug a power adapter into this card to make it work. The original price is 29.99. I will pass on this one. Edit: BTW, the firewire controller chip is a no-name no-brand one.

The chipset is agere, a division of Lucent. The box says "1394 Technology by microelectronics group Lucent Technologies", so it's not a "no-name controller".

Since each port can support 15W, plugging in a molex connector is necessary. Otherwise the 5W standard output is used, just like other FireWire cards. I installed the Actiontec I picked up from CC tonight (pricematched against Micro Center). WinXP detected it without a problem and the Que FireWire external CD burner I tested worked fine in Nero without the molex connector attached to the card.

This is a pretty nice deal.

When you plug in this powered card, make sure the Molex plug is connected. I remember reading a thread here last year that someone installed this card and fired up their PC without plugging in the Molex to the card and fried their motherboard. I have this card and was careful to do this as I didn't want to find out if that was true or not. Good card for the money, by the way. Nice post.

Too bad not everyone thinks this is a good deal. I mean, the quality of the board seems pretty decent and I did not even touch any of the installation disc... Oh. Well. I will do some DV editing tonight.

I got this card free AR a while ago (I'm happy the rebate went through) and here is the complete info on the chipset:

LUCENT
FW323-03
1394A LINK/PHY
0023S
4311825

Whatever that means!

Could you please change the title to Microcenter B&M if it's not available for online ordering?
Thanks

Just installed this thing in WinXP,
It won't capture DV using the VideoWave software that came with it, either the windows OHCI compliant driver or the Actiontec driver.
It won't capture DV in Adobe Premiere 6 either.:frown:

Anyone know anything about this Lucent chipset? How does it compare with TI? I bought two today and microcenter has a 30 day return policy.

For anyone who has bought it, any performance specs? Everything up to snuff?

thx

I had this card and sold it on fleabay. I have an Ibot FireWire Webcam and it kept blanking out on me with this card using Win XP. Once I switched the webcam to my Soundblaster Audigy FireWire port the blanking out problems went away. I would avoid this card.

Umm...this is standard. Do you really think Firewire hard drives can be run off the power of the IEEE1394B cable? You need a 4-pin molex connector for the extra Firewire port on the Audigy EX and the ports on Firewire-equipped motherboards. They must be no-name pieces of crap too. I got this card for free about a year and a half ago in a CC deal. It's never given me any problems...

Looks like a very nice card for the price. Wonder what sort of captures I'll get with my camcorder.

Interestingly I bought a noname card with a Lucent chipset and my mobo wouldn't recognize it.

Now I'm using one with a VIA chipset and it works great.

I've got on Firewire:

Panasonic LF-D311 DVD-RAM/-R drive
Teac W524E 24X CD-RW
IBM 75GXP 60 GB
Lexar Compact Flash reader.

I also have a compgeeks.com Firewire hub but it doesn't like me. If I plug more than 2 devices into it I lose the 75GXP for some strange reason, whereas daisychained they all work great together simultaneously. I guess I'll just run the hard drive and CF reader in the hub and the ROM writers daisychained.

By the way, if you have computers close together, you can use this to network at high speed, but I haven't done this myself. (My only other Firewire computer is a Mac, and it doesn't use Firewire for networking, just external devices.)
