NFS, how can you not blame that on USB? it does not matter if a particular manufacturer goofed up...you're still running on the USB platform...

btw, NE1 here using the MS Natural KB Pro? why does Microsoft recommend that we plug both the USB and PS/2 cables? Never really thought about it until now...is anyone just using the USB cable w/o the PS/2 cable plugged in? Does this even work?

Their damn Win2k drivers...that's why. Works perfectly in Win98 Do you blame Vortex 2 problems in Win2k on the PCI bus? I think not. You blame it on drivers

Anyway, I have a Natural Keyboard Pro and I don't know why...but I heard that you could just plug in the USB portion and it will work fine.

Bottom line is still that USB has more "issues" than using regular keyboard and mouse, and doesn't provide the stability that SCSI products provide. USB is easy to use (for the most part) though.

The problem with Firewire is not in the technology (it's far superior to any current USB implementation), but rather in the pricing and licensing.....

yeh i agree! USB is really concentrated for the basic user and we'll just have to wait who knows maybe next time we could also measure usb speed in megahertz. but that's not worth the wait it's a dumb idea.

Right, now we can get thousands of USB devices but I´v never seen a single firewire device. I´v noticed that shops here in iceland have started selling firewire controllers, but nothing else for firewire.

So tell me, where can I get something with a firewire interface???

Any camera shop. I don't think I've ever seen a digital camcorder without firewire.

Well, all new sony laptops seem to have firewire built in. I have it and its totally useless to me so far

as for usb, it has its uses, i can slap a usb mouse on the laptop without reboot, really convenient. only other usb thing i use is my canon scanner. New printers coming out will also be usb. Too bad usb is so slow

I have a HP laptop and I can connect a PS2 mouse to it without restarting.

The thing is, USB was never meant to take over external SCSI, it was ment to take over serial and parrallel ports, and its waaaaay better than that.

Czar,

i'm guessing you have a full size laptop. Mines ultra portable. I don't have ps2 only usb. I guess it isn't much of a trade off, heh the things a p3 650 at 4lbs

nice, mine is a PIII700mhz with 128mb memmory, 18gb hd, 15" TFT, so I think its rather big and heavy, compared to those little slim ones. Next I´ll get me a pda, beat that for portability

I think I saw one of those at a tech show here, the computer itself is about the same thickness as the monitor, very nice indead.

Mine also has a 6x DVD that I can swap for a floppy drive, the problem is I allmost destroyd my floppy at that trade show, was taking the laptop out of its case and the floppy drive was in the case and it just jumped out and smashed to the floor. It works now just alot more brrrrrrrr noise than before.

tagej is completely correct.

Firewire is Apple's baby. Thus no one really cares.

If you want to build firewire chips,
Then you PAY APPLE FEES..

the fees arent large
But they are there
and they are a turn-off.

So now think ahead.. if you were a manufacturer
what would you do?

Firewire= chip costs + licensing fee + intels decided unsupport

USB2 = chip costs + intel backing + STRONG USB implementation already

USB2 will rock...Firewire is nifty-difty and all though.. ive seen it in action..

yea, its pretty nifty. the downside is sony thinks it can charge absurd prices for accessories.. that really blows. I wouldn't worry about dropping a floppy, those things should be pretty tuff heh.

Sure, Firewire is faster (as has been stated many times already), but USB will contiunue to dominate because of its installed user base and ease of use (and implementation). By the time USB 2.0 gets here, people who use PC's will forget about Firewire

Ohh, and USB 2.0 is already here:

"In the next few months USB 2.0 will be appearing, boosting bandwidth up to 480 Mb/s, which is slightly higher than IEEE1394's 400 Mb/s. We haven spoken with several engineers and most seem to think that the actual throughput of USB 2.0 will still slightly lag behind IEEE1394 while also demanding more CPU resources. A number of engineers expressed concerns about the robustness of the USB 2.0 standard as well. Nevertheless this technology is promising and we will be watching it closely. "

The real problem is not the merits of the various technologies, IHMO. It's politics.

Firewire has been poised to take off for several years now but issues of royalties have plagued it's wide launch. It's an IEEE spec, but still a lot of players have their hands in the 1394 cookie jar. I would have said 2000 would have been the year of firewire except that Apple threw water all over the fire and basically pulled the damper on everything (these puns and mixed metaphors are mostly intentional - I'm in a silly mood).

EETime: Apple Ignites Firewire Fury

I think the royalties situation is slowly starting to get resolved, but it definitely stalled the widespread momentum behind the spec two or three years ago.

yet more politics: USB has chipset support, firewire does not. why, you ask? <conspiracy theory> intel. thats right, the same company we know and love for all those excellent chips such as the p3 1.13 GHz and the i820 decided to put USB in its chipsets a very long time ago, and will not support firewire. USB is a master/slave tech, while firewire is a peer to peer tech. so USB requires processing power, while firewire does not. and what is intel's bread and butter? processors. they need to convince people that faster processors are actually needed and how better to do that than to tell people how cool it is to have devices, such as USB, that require more processor power.</conspiracy theory>

"tagej is completely correct.

no the NAME firewire is apples baby. the technology (AFAIK) IEE1394 is not owned by APPLE.

"same company we know and love for all those excellent chips such as the p3 1.13 GHz and the i820"

NFS, does this mean you're evil for feeding Intel money and for making USB (who made USB) more popular? hehe!

that line also reminds me of the Simpsons.. Hi I'm Troy Mcluer (don't know the spelling). You may remember me from such films as...

VladTrishkin

correct, there are multiple drives out there with Firewire support! Yamaha's latest CD Burner for example!

technologically, USB and USB 2.0 is inferior, because it uses more CPU time first of all!

"Do you even use USB devices? I've been using tons of USB devices (actually 7 plugged in as we speak) and am quite happy"

I've had my USB mouse plugged into the USB port. it sucked @ss, becuase I could automatically see that whenever the CPU was busy, the mouse was SLOW.. it also reduced my RC5 speed while I was on the computer, let alone that I couldn't use it in Windows Safe mode. it's more hassle then it's worth.

ahh the keyboard.. to get it working in the BIOS, you need to turn on USB keyboard support! what about Safe mode? (I wouldn't know, never bothered after the mouse incident! good thing it's got a PS/2 adapter).

and Finally, the only thing USB is good for. game devices! YES! or is it? DAH STUPID WINDOWS! it doesn't like my USB game ports (both LOGITECH WINGMAN)!! now I can only have on of them connected at once, through the gameport!

finally, I originally thought that USB would be good for printers however, now that I know that Parallel ports run almost as fast as USB (LOL), and of course they take less CPU time, I'm sticking with that!
