I gotta say, I am someone who's totally drunk the Kool-aid on Google Glass. When I say I believe Google Glass is one of those inventions that will change the world, I'm not exaggerating. Imagine a world where everyone is a walking camera, and citizens can immediately upload and share videos using social media. It blows my mind.

I don't see a comparison at all. Glass is just an early rendition of where personal/mobile computing is heading. Segways were just a hyped niche product that solved a non-existent problem.

Some company will come up with one where the display is just like normal glasses (or sunglasses) and tethers to your smartphone so it will be a lot more inconspicuous. They're already doing prototype contact lenses that function as displays. Plus they've implanted lenses in people's eyes so its not that big of a jump to using that as the camera. Likewise they're starting to do hearing aid implants.

Which is exactly why I think you're wrong. Actually I don't just think it, its a major focus for a lot of computing projects, from the military to major corporations that essentially dictate the computing products you use.

If you want to argue this first version of Glass then ok although that's just so silly I can't imagine someone making that argument as it'd be like saying how laptops were just totally stupid or PDAs were even though anyone with even a remotely limited amount of foresight could see what the potential for products like that are. Its basically known to be a beta product to get real world data on its use so they can improve it for widespread use.

How do you call mobile computing a niche? Think of the thousands of videos that have been captured on cell phones and their impact on society. The amazing thing about Glass is the ease at which you can carry it and film. Imagine the technology of a news reporters camera, sitting on the bridge of you nose, 24/7. When the manufacturing costs lower enough so that it's widely accessible (unquestionably will happen) then the level of connectedness it brings will be stunning.

You DO realize that most inventions are indeed "pasting things together". You don't invent a whole new product made up of only massive innovations and shit, specifically and especially in the tech field.

Glass is about the next stage of mobile computing, or at least a little stepping stone to it, where you don't have people carrying around giant slabs of a smartphone, bur instead have it always instantly available instead of having to bring it out every 5 minutes.

Also, Glass is all about taking the internals of a smatphone and having it engineered so that it can be worn at all times and be inconspicuous. Also shit like that Prism display is REALLY cool shit.

You guys are way off base on the Segway. The real reason that it failed is it cost five-fucking-thousand dollars. I can get a used car for that kind of money. If the Segway only cost $500 then I would have bought one and a lot more would have too. You can get a top end scooter for $1500 and sit on your ass to boot so why even get a Segway.

Once the price gets down to $300 then ya this will take off and if the glasses will do everything my smart phone can do then I would consider getting them.

I predict youtube and flickr are going to have to increase storage capacity by a couple of orders of magnitude if Glass hits mainstream. Now, even situations where the slight extra effort of taking the phone out of pocket, unlocking and then hitting the camera app would dissuade someone from taking a pointless video are overcome by the ease of use of a head mounted camera.

Glass may sell well if the price point gets low enough but I don't see the potential being realized until good augmented reality apps take hold. I can imagine the power of this tool if I'm able to get all my information on tap just by glancing at someone/something. That'd be a hell of a world.

That's the end goal, a powerful augmented reality, and eventually replacing cell phones completely. After all these years the fundamentals of using a cell phone have not changed, even with how far smart phones have come. Obviously we're not going to get there in one product generation, which for some reason is what Glass detractors are expecting.
