The Segway is an intentionally niche product whereas Glass is a natural progression of the market.
Let me guess you were also saying this same thing about the iPhone? Or maybe the iPad (there have been a few people who have said that about the iPad on here).
Further perpendicular, well yeah that's exactly why its stupid. It was hyped as literally something that would completely change transportation, when literally the only thing it did of note was the interesting balancing which proved to actually be unnecessary for a vehicle of its intended use.
All of these mentioned things are natural progressions of
technology implemented in dumb ways to attract the sheeple. It's a progression of the market in that the market wants to see things that make them say 'oooh, shiny.'
Small touchscreen computers can have some very effective uses. Apple said 'HAY LOOK, YOU MAKE PHONECALLS AND PLAY MUSIC ON IT.'
The tech in the Segway was first introduced as a wheelchair that could climb stairs and shit. But instead, we got 'HAY LOOK, I'M A FUCKING LAZY DOUCHEKNOB.'
Google Glass (dumbass product name, btw) says, hey, look! Tiny cameras, a minature transparent display, complex programming, ect...'HAY LOOK, YOU CAN MAKE PHONECALLS AND PLAY MUSIC ON IT.'
Christ.
edit: one more random thought...it would appear that mankind has simply run out of things to invent. And/or we're dumb and/or just don't give a shit anymore. But hot damn, do we love to paste things together.
So we've all started to worship companies who are basically nothing but a corporate version of the wrenchknife-inventing janitor from 'Scrubs.'
