First bootup of the day

For a week now on the first bootup of the day, Windows XP gives me a non system disk error, and seems to try to access my DVD drive for a long while. If I then crtl-alt-del it will usually start up fine on 2nd, sometimes 3rd try. Then for the rest of the day it works fine, even if I do several restarts for various reasons. I dont know why it access's my DVD drive as it isnt even in my boot order in the bios. Ive got it set to the Floppy, then HDD, then my CD drive. WesterDigital's HDD diagnostics routine gives my main HDD passing grades with good SMART report. Ive done a diskcheck in windows with no problems. Ive done SiSoft Sandra's File System check with no problems.

Primary Master: WD800JB 80GB HDD
Primary Slave: WD800BB 80GB HDD
Second Master: Sony CD-RW
Socond Slave: Sony DRU500A DVD-+RW

Any idea's on what to check are appreciated. Thanks.

try taking out the non boot HD(or are they in RAID?) maybe trying to access wrong HD

BIOS maybe ???...
Try to clear and reset the BIOS. it may have got corrupted

Next try is a longshot, except that you say have problem first thing in morning , then okay
That would be the battery. Reset it and if that doesn't do it, then spend two bucks and replace it.

thanks for the advice. Im going to download the latest bios for mobo. I didnt realize that Asus has updated it twice in last 6 months. If I flash the bios, will that take care of it if it is a corrupted bios causing my problem? Also, the idea about the battery is interesting because I ran across someone having a different HDD recognition problem with my mobo model at beginning of day and they solved it with a new battery. I'll try that if the bios update doesnt help. thanks alot.

OK, I updated to latest bios and reset the ESCD, and made sure I had the latest Via 4in1's for my chipset which I already had. No fix. As usuall I dont have my DVDRW drive in the boot order at all. It is the slave drive on my secondary IDE controller. However, I left my Windows XP CD in that drive when I shut down last night. That way, when the computer refused to boot from HDD this morning, and it sat there for a while trying to access the DVD drive, it still gave me a non system disk error, and said to insert a system disk and hit enter. Instead of Ctrl-alt-del to restart, I hit enter and it booted from the Windows CD in my DVD drive. Thats all I did this morning. I restarted and on 2nd try it booted from HDD just fine. Im gonna try the battery. Im also gonna reenable the onboard sound so I can get beep codes and error reports from the onboard POST speech reporter (part of this mobo) and see what that says if anything. Any other ideas? Maybe unhook the DVD drive to see if it is messing things up? Thanks everyone.
