get a credit card but *do not use it *. Your credit rating will increase over time so when you do need to get credit (mortgage, etc) you start with something under your belt. Maybe spend the odd fiver on it but pay it off pronto. Debt is a bad, bad thing.

At least this is how it works in the UK....

For thoose that say don't get one, GET one, starting your credit history is important, just don't use it if you can't afford it with cash.

CC companies to avoid like the plague:

Fleet
Providian

There may be more.

Providian has turned around, they used to be a company that took anyone, they changed to people with better credit. Their CS isn't the best in the world, but they are a competitve company, good APR for me, great BT rates, and 1% rewards.

Get a debit card with your bank. I doubt you have a job that gives you money to pay off bills. Debit card is much safer because you will only spend what you have, not what you dont have - which can be dangerous at your age. Now is definately not the time to start off with bad credit...

If you feel you are responsible, get a Credit Card from your bank. This will make it easy to pay the bills as you can arrange for them to take it out of your savings/checkings.

After you get at least the bank credit card, you can then with ease, get a Banana Republic card (good at old navy and gap), if you shop at these places. Since these credit cards are restrictive on where you spend your credit, its difficult to overspend on other things.

If it was my advice, i would go with debit card, and when you graduate from college/get a job, get a bank credit card in addition. Then go on to other credit cards with benefits you USE.

Debit card builds NO credit history what so ever, not a good thing, get a credit card, just don't use it much.

Well, it sounds like you are smart with your finances, so ignore all those that say don't get one. Obviously get one that has no annual fee (AmEx usually does, most others usually don't) and never carry a balance over to the next month if you can help it.

When I was 18 I got a Discover Platinum Card - you get 1% back on all your purchases.
Edit - make sure Discover is not your ONLY card, a lot of places don't take it because they charge a higher fee to the company that you purchase from. I'd recommend having a Visa or Mastercard too.

Recently I got a Citibank Dividends card - 1% back on all purchases plus 5% back on gas, grocery, and drug store purchases.

So try to get one that has some sort of rewards program, whether it be cash back, airline miles, etc. May as well get something for free out of the CC company.

for the starters, you can always get a joint one with mom or dad... they'll pay it off if you're in trouble... your credit history can still grow.

i got a regular Visa Platinum from Wells Fargo when I turned 18 without having to have parents cosign or anything. Sister's friend at the bank hooked me up apparently.
