First day or job attire

So I am starting an internship tomorrow and am a bit confused. The company is a very small organization that is given space inside a utility company's office building. They never said (and I forgot to ask) what the appropriate attire is. FWIW, the internship is to develop an information architecture for documents.

I would assume it is business casual (nice black shoes, khakis, good black polo shirt). I talked to the temp agency type place the pointed me to it, and he initially said business casual, then started talking about a suit and tie. Note that this guy does not really know anything about this company.

So I am a bit confused, do I go with business casual, or do I go with the full getup (minus the jacket, I do not even own one at the moment)? I would assume that the office building is business casual, but....



Crap, I only own one dress shirt and tie (same one I wore to the interview).

My interviewer had a suit on, but I am not sure how much that applies. The interviewer was the head guy of the organization (there are about eight total). Also, it was a three way interview in that there was me, the head guy, and then the account manager for the campus-affiliated internship agency.

Reminiscing my first day at current job (a long time ago...), came in with the usual business casual, slacks, long sleeve and tie. By noon, the tie was gone. I also vividly remember the manager told me not to ever come to work dressing like that again because it made the rest of them look bad. :laugh:

I would dress appropriately as you have planned, then adjust accordingly.

Thanks. That was sortof my idea. It seems to me that as an intern it would be just as bad to overdress as underdress, especially over an eight hour workday (what tomorrow will likely be).

Go with the tie on the first day to be safe. If that is over-dressed, you wear something more casual the next day, but first impressions count.

what did the people working at the place wear (other than the interviewer)...

yeah, overdressing is better than underdressing... put on a suit, if you don't need it, at lunch, ditch the jacket and the tie in the car.

those three ways are fun cause they make you the center of attention...kidding aside...

since the dress code isn't clear cut to you, yet...go conservative and wear a suit + tie to work. you can always take off the jacket and tie later in the day.

and yeah, you might get a friendly ribbing for overdressing from your boss, but that's part of tradition!

Nope. I figure I can give the excuse that they did not tell me I had the job and when I would start until this afternoon, so I literally have no time.
