finally failed to resist the temptation for dual core. Cheaped out for the X2 4200 coz 4400 cost $100 more. it's amazing, I ran TMPGenc DVD Author to author a dvd from some VCD mpg files, and played BF2 at the same time. There was no slow down in BF2 at all! Also ran TMPGenc to encode some mpeg files, it's amazingly fast (compared to my previous OC A64 3000) with both core at 100% usage. Maybe this will be the first overpriced purchase that I will not regret

Yes, the dual core is pretty awesome. Pretty freaking awesome! Too bad it will be around 150-200 dollars in a year or so, if the prices fall at the same rate the 3000+ venice did.

Hey guys,

I have recently stumbled upon this article and am really considering this over the 3000+ venice i was planning to get originally since i plan to wait at least another month. I am just wondering where exactly i will see the performance differences. Is it when i run multiple applications (encoding + game) or will the apps alone benefit as well? I am basically just considering whether almost 3X the price (350 instead of 120) is worthit. I am mainly a gamer but also sometimes encode movies, photoshop, etc

Thanks

Well, it's going to, basically, be two 3200s so you'll get better performance than with a 3000 anyway. If you plan on overclocking, I wouldnt count on it getting higher than 2.4 (at least the initial batch. Of course, this is just speculation--they might end up being just as good overclockers as the higher speed bins, it actually depends on how well AMDs yields are and your luck ^^).

If you game and encode at the same time you will DEFINITELY feel the difference--your game should run at full speed regardless. If you are encoding while using photoshop, for example, your system should still very responsive as well. And if your encoder is multithreaded it will be much faster by itself.

Since price gouging didnt hit the other manchesters too badly, I'd expect the price to drop down to the 1k-lot price rather fast.

by 1k-lot price I meant the price per cpu directly from AMD in lots of 1000.

Well, if that's what you're gonna do on a regular basis than it's certainly a good investment. Otherwise, you just blew your wad prematurely on a pointless upgrade.

If you are like me, and like to make sure your CPU purchases last a long time, get the X2 - it has a lot more life in the future than the other one you mention.

I am actually thinking about x2 3800+ when it comes out.... my original plan was 3000+ as i had mentioned and i agree with you that it has more future but the question is... by the time apps are actually made to work with dual core would buying a 3000+ for 120 bux now and then just waiting it out a couple years with it (i don't think there will be many apps within the next couple of years using dual core) and then in two years time, there should probably be a processor still using socket 939 for $250ish which would probably be a lot better than the x2 3800+ will be.

Of course i am speculating... any opinions on this?

hey i got a question, what boards support a x2, its lookin mighty interesting to me, im just curious(i might get one in the near future).

oh and i wanted to say, man has dfi changed since i used them, i had a k6-2 board by them, and it sucked ass, the usb ports fried, and then the agp slot didnt work after long. apparently their mighty good now.

They're supposed to be good for overclocking, but they can be very finicky (especially with memory) from what I've read. The story of why I crossed DFI off my list and went with ASUS doesn't belong here, but as long as you do your reading beforehand and make an informed purchase, you should be satisfied with whatever you get.

I think pretty much all NF4 boards support x2 with a bios update

I can't even do a fair comparison because I went from a Intel P3 733mhz to this.

I don't know what the single core athlons feel like or what they can do.

Well, I remember about a year ago when everybody was saying how PCIe wouldn't work because everyone likes AGP. Then all the motherboard manufacturers stopped making AGP boards, and everyone bought PCIe. PCIe is now de-facto.

You can easily apply the same idea to dual-core. At the moment you can think it will be "years *(sigh)" before dual-core cpus are utilized. It may be very much like the AGP->PCIe transition in speed terms.
