Really embarrassing to see 390X keeping up with 1070 in some recent games. The Division, Hitman and AotS specifically.
Hitman and AotS are AMD sponsored games where even the TitanX is behind the 1070.

The bandwidth was always going to be a problem, add to that 256bit vs 512bit on the 390x & you have a mini storm in a tea cup. I guess any of the claims that mem compression on Pascal was enhanced should be taken with a bucket full of salt, that or the skimpy 256bit is just too little for 4K. I see a repeat of 960 here & looks like the 1070 will be even more horrid VFM card, it'll also age real badly if the some of the recent benches indicate a growing trend,
Yet looking at 4k performance its above the TX (or matching it) in all the 4k benches. 256bit performance in newer NV arches has always confounded the naysayers, who still bring up the poor 256 vs 512bit argument of an entirely different arch for comparison. Misleading as hell and they probably know better even when the benches speak loudly for themselves. Once this card starts appearing at $380-390 or thereabouts, looks like a solid winner to me.

Or maybe AMD is just doing DX12 much better.

AotS, Hitman, Quantum Break, Killer Instinct, Total War: Warhammer -
AMD is far ahead. Other DX12 games where AMD is slightly ahead or on par - Gears, Forza. The only DX12 game where Nvidia does much better is RotR, but everyone loses performance in DX12 - clearly not optimised.

Vulkan is more of an unknown - Nvidia may win there, but it's not going to be very many games.

I'm concerned the 1070 will fall off a cliff this time next year when there will be few DX11 games around.

nvidia literally killing amd with this gpu, gtx 1070 is 30% faster, half tdp vs the r9 390x and it costs less $379...

now amd should lower prices to remain competitive...fury x at $320 and r9 390x at below $270 otherwise they wont sell a single gpu...

and thats not even considering a custom factory oc gtx 1070 at 2ghz could do...

polaris is in big trouble without even appearing...it should be $250 to sell anything, i wonder if thats will make any profit for amd..

This is a thread about a 1070 review, not the downfall of AMD... stop with the thread crapping.

1070 can be 50% more expensive for 20% higher performance? (assuming polaris tops at 390x..)
Weird logic.

Would suprise me if 1070 would cost less than 379$.. From the latest things i read it would cost 430€ .. which is closer to 500$ not 379.

But the GLOP count given by nvidia was way off for gaming... given there sample boosted to 1.9GHz instead of the 1.6-1.7.. Hence why the 1070 isn't 10% slower than the 980ti reference. (unless you have a bad sample/cooling/room temperature) where you only reach the advertised boost clocks.

Eh, that trend may continue but it's very early days for DX12 engines yet. That it's still very common to lose performance from DX11 on at least NV cards and sometimes AMD as well suggests there's still a lot of optimization work needed from game developers - that really shouldn't be happening.

Warhammer is placed incorrectly Nvidia does much better in Forza too

Polaris at $249 would should have good margins for amd still. Everyone spreading the fud about Polaris ignores the fact that it's a smaller chip not meant to compete with gp104.

Smaller chip, more good dies, better margins.

^This. Its pretty widely known that AMDs architecture is a better design for DX12 as all the new low level APIs are so similar to Mantle.
I'm also concerned that the 1070 will fall off a cliff rather quickly, as NV has historically proven that. Pascal seems like a fairly weak architecture for modern and future games, and I suspect will only get worse going forward and as they release cards further down the stack with the defective chips that aren't fully functional.

Kepler and GCN 1.0 doesn't work in DX12 mode in Warhammer. FL12.0 needed.

Pretty sad o/c performance. At least the 970 was much more overclockable, hopefully AIB's will make better boards... We'll see if Nvidia's driver team will be able to suppress 980Ti/TX performance just like what they did to my prior 780Ti. In other words, I wouldn't be surprised if the 1070 is faster with next year's games...

how? i thought the complete DX12 patch is not yet released..
but currently saying nvidia is faster in warhammer is inaccurate.

According to OC3D Fury X is about 7% faster on 1440p
and 6.5% faster at 4K

http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/gpu_displays/total_war_warhammer_pc_performance_review/12

380 is 16% faster than 960. so it seems AMD is doing better compared to nvidia then in other (non Dx12) games.

This seems like pretty good performance for $379. It gives you about the same performance as a 980ti, but for $200 less. The 1070's lower OC potential is offset by the newer architecture and features - not to mention nVidia driver support.

This card obsoletes the 980ti, 980, 970, Fury, and 390x/390 all in one go.

Considering the demand for the 1080 (1070 demand is going to be even higher), I really really doubt we see $379 MSRP before the end of summer vacation. This is going to be a $450-$479 card.... unless Polaris is faster than leaks suggest.

I was actually surprised by how many 1080 AIB cards have already been priced at just a little more than the $599 MSRP. I assumed they'd all be closer to $700. By the time the 1070 AIB cards go on sale I'd guess that there will be lots of models being sold at $379-$400.

So... this is a very bad news from nVIDIA... the 1080 was so good, but the 1070 is.... near 35% slower?
WHAT THE HELL THEY WERE THINKING?
To make it worse is AMD's chance to strike back with the 480..

And that's only on references cards.... So... nVIDIA needs to have excellent custom cards or they will have a very bad time...

BTW... even Fury Nano can deal with 1070... so time for AMD to lower the prices once again....

And to make it worse... is unlikely to see Custom Mini ITX cards from those 2 guys for a long while.
Expected to see a better cards that the 970 "dissaster".... I was wrong. It's a same troublesome card and they are inaugurating the XX70 curse with that.

How does the nano compete with the 1070?
Less VRAM, More power consumption, etc.

Just like AMD using the R9 290 to combat the 970 didn't work, you can't use the nano to combat the 1070.

People want something NEW. Not to buy an old product. 1070 will firesale well just like the 1080. Especially when the competition has no product out for awhile.

Yea, unless Polaris 10 cards come soon enough(and are competitive)
gtx 1070 will outsell any other thing at the high end.

well, if this is any indication of 1070's performance and lack of oc potential = used 980 ti all the way.

I found a few within 300$ range

Just like we were only going to see $700+ 1080s?
