..and they are looking pretty good.

from Walt Mossberg:
"I was impressed with the iPad’s battery life, which I found to be even longer than Apple’s ten-hour claim, and far longer than on my laptops or smart phones. For my battery test, I played movies, TV shows and other videos back-to-back until the iPad died. This stressed the device’s most power-hogging feature, its screen. The iPad lasted 11 hours and 28 minutes, about 15% more than Apple claimed. I was able to watch four feature-length movies, four TV episodes and a video of a 90-minute corporate presentation, before the battery died midway through an episode of “The Closer.”"

The USAtoday review said they got 12 hours of continuous movie playback...pretty good.

sweet. Now if I only had a need for a giant ipod touch.

This thing is supposed to be for mobile use right? How do you carry it around?

When you are around the house...your hands. Out and about I am guessing a case/bag/tote/plastic sack. Kind of like a laptop, or do you not consider those portable?

why not carry a laptop then?

If I was around the house...couldn't I just watch a movie on my TV?

I think you should stick with a laptop. In fact, sounds like you have your mind made up and I don't really care to try and convince you otherwise. Guess you get to save $500+!

It's a neat device. It just doesn't offer $500 worth of value.

The NotionInk Adam, OTOH, does.

Yea it does less than other devices can do for more money. I guess I'm not cool enough to understand why someone would want this.

Laptop weighs more, so if weight is a concern, the iPad is a viable alternative.

Yes of course you can, though I did hear that there was an app that would make all your TVs explode... may have just been a rumor though.

I don't think that the iPad is for people that already have smartphones and laptops and workflows that use them both, but if a person wants to upgrade their laptop, then the iPad might be a viable option.

Sweet, I'm eager to read all the reviews/impressions. I was hugely disappointed after the keynote, but now that I've come to terms with the product I'm pretty excited. I'm not planning on getting one (going to try and hold out for the next generation) but I think this has potential to be the perfect couch/bed device for the average consumer. I actually think this might be the PERFECT device for my Grandfather. He can carry it around the house, check his emails, surf a view pages, and easily show Grandma photos of the kids.

But not at the same time. That's asking too much of a device of this cost.

Meh, not as portable as my smartphone, not as powerful as my laptop and not as functional as my netbook.

But I could look super cool in Starbucks.

Why would he want or need to do all those things at once? All of the apps mentioned will take up where they left off.

I have a laptop, a desktop and the real world world to have to entertain me, not something that will waste my time on nonsensical things, like fart apps or iTunes. I have a laptop for class, a desktop for home and a Sony MP3 player while I walk around campus.

My two cents for the iPad, not only is it hyped to shit and back because it's Apple, but it is in essence what we already have seen, just in larger form. Also, I cannot see this for public use, I mean, someone will either steal it, break it or something else that causes harm to it. Laptops are everywhere, laptops are the usual, doesn't catch anyone's eye, and when someone sees it, I'm sure they might have a mind to go after it or something else worse. It seems it's something you should keep inside your own home.

Another thing, I really hate it when people say that using something like a laptop or a desktop is anti-social and something like an iPad or iPhone is not. For one, social networks of any kind or have a social life when it came to electronics was ON the computer, a real computer or a real workstation, not a cellphone or a gimmicky thing like the iPad. I am being social right now talking to you guys about how I feel using a REAL keyboard and mouse, not a touch pad. Let me ask you something, and I mean, really ask you two things: one, would you buy it if it wasn't Apple? And two, wouldn't there be something better and more productive/more-bang-for-the-buck than the iPad? A PS3 with some real next-gen games? A 360 to play Halo/other games with your friends? A hooker? I dunno, something?

Anyways, that's my two cents.

I think I'm gonna sig that. Cuz its fucking perfect.
The device is a great in-between for those of us that have too many devices already and can do everything we want to do anyway.

To be honest, if someone starts flaunting one of them in front of my face, I'll warn them to get it away, and if they don't, say hello to a smashed iPad. Bring on the Norton Ink and HP Slate so I don't have to listen about the iPad in the future.

It's a new class of device. Sink or swim at least Apple has the stones to take a risk rather than release another me-too, play-it-safe device like everyone else is doing. I commend them for at least that.
