A screen with tiny rez, extremely less capability, is going to be a bitch to type stuff on, and much more expensive??? Sounds great where do I sign up?

Pfft. If geek interest drove the market the Creative NOMAD would have destroyed the iPod.

...looks at his 11.6" ULV notebook that cost less than an iPad, runs Win7 + an XP VM, has 3 USB, VGA, HDMI, etc...

iPad what?? Call me when they put a real OS and a couple of USB ports on the thing.

Your notebook doesn't have a multitouch screen and the screen on this is MUCH better than any Laptop unless you spend a lot of bucks. I strongly dislike all LCD's (they suck) but the LED backlit ones are about as good as they get. Show me a notebook that's the same price that has an LED backlit screen. The screen alone make the iPad superior to notebooks, I dunno about you but when I'm on an electronic device the quality of the screen is one of the most important things. Have fun with your laptop that has a TN screen.

???

I am glad that you know the price of the courier seeing it hasn't even been announced iirc, and as for the joojoo it costs $500 genius. Does it support 3G?

The $500 iPad doesn't support 3G either.

right, I was referring to his insinuation that the joojoo did.

Ah, my apologies then.

At any rate, as gimped as I think the iPad is, the gadget lover in me still wants to blow money on buying one. Wouldn't be the first time I bought a gadget I didn't really need.

haha, but you wouldn't be a true gadget lover if you only bought things you needed

Smaller start ups should fear themselves. 100 pre-orders of the JooJoo? Do you really expect any of these no-name devices to sell at all, much less be any competition for the iPad?

The sad thing is that the iPad is going to go uncontested for a while, in which time it will fortify its place in this new device market. The only real competition would be an Android tablet, but Google is all over the place right now between mobile, Android, and ChromeOS I doubt they could pull anything focused off that could compete with Apple. The MS Courier is another possibility, but seeing how poorly the Zune performed, and even the Xbox 360 in the grand scheme of things, I would not count on Microsoft for any kind of CE device miracle.

To me it's nothing more than a Kindle/Nook with an open OS. It seems like they just took the inspiration for those and just opened it up. But honestly, the fact that it cannot multi-task is just pathetic. You mean I can't listen to music and browse the web at the same time as some web sites have said?

And Apples hatred for Adobe is lousy. They're screwing customers because they want to act like immature brats and not support one of the most uses plugins around.

I think it'll do well because of the hype machine at first. But ultimately it's kind of a pointless unit that is too large to be ultra portable and too underwhelming to replace a notebook/laptop. It doesn't do enough or does too much. Phones are getting so advanced and when you see things like the EVO coming out, who's functionality is as good or better than the iPad....

It's just another device to have to keep up with and won't replace my others. I carry a laptop with me to work and travel. I have a Droid that I use when I'm out and about without my laptop. An iPad would be a waste for me. I think a lot of people are going to be in the same boat ultimately. They will realize they wasted $500+ down the road when it's collecting dust because they don't want to carry it around.

You sound like someone who wouldn't benefit all that much from one, but I disagree with your assessment that "most" people are in the same boat as you. "Most" people don't have a powerful smartphone like a droid/nexus/iphone.

You can have the iPod running the background listening to your music while you surf the web while Mail is checking email.

(Unless you are referring to Pandora)

I said it wouldn't be of much use to me.

But I'd bet "most" people who are spending $600 for an iPad are going to be people who own a smartphone or laptop already. You don't see grandma pre-ordering an iPad. It's people who own a mac, own an iPod Touch or iPhone or another high tech device already. Not to mention I also said that smartphones are getting better and future adopters aren't going to need to buy this simply because their other devices already do this stuff. I think it'll have it's moment initially, but it'll fade out over the next couple of years.

I'm talking about the iPad, not the iPod. I thought multi-tasking wasn't happening on the iPad. How are you checking mail while surfing the web? My iPod touch is the same way, no true multi-tasking. I could be wrong, but I thought that is what some of the reviews were complaining about - lack of multi-tasking.

lol

You check your mail and surf at the same time the the same way as you do on any portable device. If you click a link in email, it will open it in a web browser, and then when you close you can go to your email and it opens where you left off. Unless you are demanding the viewing of both screens at the same time which seems absurd.

I was referring the "iPod.app" on the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch. Start listening to music, go back home and launch Safari. You're now listening to music and surfing the web. Mail.app is checking for mail every x minutes (or receiving push mail) while you are doing other things. Both of these run in the background while you are surfing the web.

What everyone is complaining about is the fact that 3rd party multi-tasking is not allowed. i.e. you can't have an instant messaging app continue running while you go surf.

My laptop has an LED backlit screen, and the quality is fine. It's also 16:9, like movies and hdtv are.

I don't need multitouch because I have a keyboard and trackpad, which requires you to move one finger over a distance of 1 or 2 inches, instead of making movements with my whole arm. What's next, having to swipe two hands left or right on my TV to change channels? One hand up and down could be volume...

I don't get it. There's a poll in ATOT asking what people want for web video out of Flash, HTML5, etc. and by far people want HTML5.

I run a major site written 100% in Flash. I know all the top Flash devs in the country and have a lot of personal contacts at Adobe. Even with all that I can't wait for HTML5 to take off and the browser plugins to go away. It's a long way off, but if companies with clout like Apple can accelerate the demise of the browser plugin, I am all for it.

Apple sack riding at it's finest.

My cheap as shit Netbook has an LED backlit display. And it can multitask, and has a multi touch mouse pad. I guess you'll need to have an IPS on the iPad, because it will be impossible to have it at a comfortable angle otherwise as it will just lie flat, unlike my C.A.S. Netbook that has a convenient screen I can angle anyway I want for maximum comfort.

Have fun holding your iPad at an angle for 90 minutes to watch a movie.

But hey, you'll look cool in Starbucks.

If you're going by display technology alone, the OLED smartphones have screens that are a bigger improvement over IPS than IPS is over TN. Does that make the Ipad useless?

Dont you have an iPod Touch and have it extensively modded into your car?

I have a shit ton of iPods, some of which are used in my car and integrated into my OEM Nav headunit, yes, but I don't let it cloud my judgement to the point where if Steve made an iWashingline I'd jizz in my pants. :awe:

The OLED screen in my Nexus One sucks in the sunlight to the point of being unuseable unless you set it to full blaze mode before you go outside, because once youre outside, you wont even be able to put it in full blaze mode because you cant see shit, its that bad...

Brightness in direct sunlight is the one drawback of OLED. But how often is it that you're out in the middle of nowhere with no shadows from buildings or trees or anything to get under? No car?

He was making a point that the image quality of the screen made every other advantage other devices had moot. I was pointing out that going by that logic, the ipad is a lesser device than smartphones.

If you work on-call or out in the field this is a great alternative to a full laptop next to you.

In what way? If you work in a technical field the hardware won't be up to the software. If you work in a manual field the device is too fragile. Panasonic Toughbook it is not.
