I think Demo was hoping for something like how Windows 7 supports multi-touch, but makes no concessions past that. What a lot of people don't get when looking at something like the iPad is that a mouse or stylus can hit a 1 pixel target, the human finger cannot, and so a traditional desktop OS interface is never going to work on something like this.

I don't know of many that need 1 pixel accuracy though.

The main problem with the iPad is too many are thinking of it as a laptop replacement which it is not.

It's an excellent alternative to those using tablets that never need to use the keyboard and for those that have admin interfaces that only require mouse clicks.

If I can run citrix on it, it would be a ton better than having to lug around a laptop when I am on call.

Well, think about your standard OS X or Windows desktop, look at the minimize, maximize and close buttons. Yes, they are larger than 1 pixel, but they are quite close together. With the ability to hit a 1 pixel target, the buttons can be close together so long as they of a reasonable size. On a touch screen device where you are supposed to interact with your fingers, you can hit a 10*10 or 15*15 target at best, and so the buttons need to be made larger still to compensate. Put your finger on the screen trying to close a window, let me know how much it covers the neighboring buttons.

It's doesn't work like this with touchscreen programming though.

There are hotspots with centers.

I understand that, but if you have ever played with those multi-touch HP Touchsmarts, then I think you have seen that even with that allowance made, the OS is still not quite there for use with one's fingers and that goes for most every desktop OS.

Yea, it will be very interesting to see how HP skins/optimizes Win7. Could be really neat if they do it right.

I think the Joojoo shows how not to make a touchscreen lol. The engadget review was pretty bad. The part where the guy was trying to press the youtube res button and it just wouldnt register was painful.

I apologize in advance if this has been mentioned before.

One thing that has perked my interest is the logmein app. I would really like to be laying on the couch and be able to control my computer from the ipad. I think having processes and storage off device can make things very interesting.

Tablet makers need to take a page from cellphone manufacturers, a Sense UI overlay of Windows 7 would be pretty slick and only need to be a couple of layers deep for several major apps, then default to the W7 touch interface thats god awful.

Where they're going to run into problems is that anyone that tries to use a W7 based tablet will want to be able to run software for windows that's not touchscreen friendly.

Having a killer hardware line up is useless if the OS isnt optimized for touch, then you get to start dealing with productivity & entertainment software, another potential mess, and with all the software that's available for Windows, you have years of incompatibility ahead...

So the HP tablet will have up to 5 hours battery? That's a joke, right? This thing will fail so hard it's not funny. Windows 7 and Atom... I get shivers on the thought alone (well, I love Win7, I loathe Atom - it's an abortion of a CPU). The bezel is bigger than on the iPad - seriously, who designs those things? So it will run sluggish (and I had a netbook with Win7 so I know), look like shit and run out of juice very fast. "Great" - why would anyone need this thing anyway? Get an ASUS UL30Vt or something if you want a long-battery, portable Win7 device. It actually runs fast and lasts around 10 hours...

And the JooJoo - did you guys see the Engadget video review? Holy shit, it tanks so bad - the UI is a joke, the responsiveness is terrible and the speed it god awful. The iPad feels like something from a science-fiction movie compared to this piece of shit.

How do any of those companies expect their devices to succeed? It should at least be as good as the competition and offer something more if possible...

I'm waiting to see how the Tegra2 powered Gemini and ADAM stack up to the iPad... I'm pretty sure they can't be any worse than the Slate and JooJoo...

Like media edition, once the market shows a need the OS makers will release optimized OS/apps.

Keep in mind this device is NOT a laptop replacement. It's for consuming content not productivity/development.

Precisely why I don't want one. Don't want a third device. Too much crap to carry around without it.

do you use it? iPad is much the same way...if you are mistyping on your iPhone then you aren't doing something right.

I do not use it very often, no. Although it is physically an iPhone, there is no data plan on it, so I use it as an iPod Touch. It is a very fun time waster, and I read comics on it, play games, surf the web when I am out. All kinds of stuff. And I don't make that many spelling mistakes on it. A few, but I am not really used to it.

It sounds like the iPad is a better multimedia entertainment tablet than any of the competing multimedia entertainment tablets out there. The real problem is that the entire concept of a multimedia entertainment tablet seems pointless to me. If it weren't made by Apple, it would be a dud. People wouldn't know what to do with it. With the iPad, people still don't know what they'll do with it, but they want it anyway.
