What exactly does the DX10 mode do in this game?

Is there any way to change the resolution without entering the game (found a default.cfg file but it's unreadable)? The stupid game defaults to 1280x720 and apparently that can't be displayed...

Inside the game, goto video, change the resolution. Also make sure you turn fullscreen on. Then save it and you should be fine.
It had me looking for a cfg for a while till I figured it out.
I would take some screenshots but Fraps apparently doesn't work with DX10 yet.

I'm running Vista and DX10, had to manually add d3dx10_33.dll as MSUEngineer mentioned above... That took care of that error, but now it gives me an error message that 1280x720 is not supported. Is there maybe some way to add that to the NVidia drivers (I'm using the latest official release), or am I screwed until the demo is patched? WHY would they default to such a resolution anyway?

Color me unimpressed. Under DX10 with everything maxed out, running at 1600x1000, it averaged 19fps on my system (X2 4400, 8800GTX, 2GB DDR2) with no apparent visual improvement over the 360 version. What DX10 visual effects are in this game that are not available in the DX9 version?
Also, I hope this is not indicative of general DX10 performance in all games. Hopefully the driver situation will be remedied in time for Crysis, because it's looking like I may need to go SLI (in addition to a K10 quad-core as soon as they're available). Sigh. This hobby does get rather expensive.

You did not read above message, so I will do this for benefit of all:
To all VISTA DX10 USERS: YOU MUST INSTALL LATEST DX9 (April 2007)

Again, don't think I'm having any issues with DirectX, it's simply that 1280x720 isn't supported by my monitor (or so Vista thinks) and I can't figure out how to add the resolution support manually or manually change the resolution of the game via config files.

There has always been this nagging concern that DX10 itself is a bottle of snake oil (all we have had is PR). What if people find out the API isn't really faster due to unforeseen issues, but runs like mollasses in winter.

I would install latest directx.
Do you have the proper monito INF installed or some generic PNP driver installed (that would be bad). People never think monitor drivers are necessary until issues like this arise. The game detects capability of the monitor, while Vista uses the monitor driver info of your monitors capabilities. If you didn't have preoper monitor driver, you will likely have to reinstall the game so it can properly redetect. Beyond that, I don't know.
