Hi guys, I am not looking for anything fancy, just a solid build that can run games at decent settings.

I would use one of the builds listed in this forum, except I am looking to purchase pieces one or two at a time when they go on sale (am not in a rush-2,3, even 6 months would be ok). Are there any specific parts that go on sale at predictable times or seasons that I should look for? Furthermore, are there parts that I should not bother looking for deals on?

After a look around the forum, I found this motherboard (Asrock z77 + 8 gb free RAM).
I have also been looking at black friday deals for a cheap 24" monitor. Are there other parts that are typically good buys during that weekend?

Do not buy parts piecemeal, it can only end in tears. Components lose value over time, money in the bank increasing in value over time (or at least doesn't decrease). You will generally not save money by buying parts over 3-6 months versus buying them all at once in at the end of that time period.

Do you need a monitor, mouse, keyboard, and/or OS license? What is the amount of cash you have on hand right now? If you have a decent amount, we can probably get you a build that will at least function. Then you can upgrade it into the $1K gaming machine you want it to be.

Welcome to the forums! Just to add on, if you are playing games because the overall experience is most important (i.e. as you said you can live with "decent" settings) then you can definitely get a decent start now. Buying over time is not a good way to go, it makes replacing parts more difficult if there is something wrong.

Does anyone know if the MicroCenter deal on the 3570k/MB combo is still available? It would probably be a pretty good bet for a build in the $1k range.

Also, if you're looking to play Borderlands 2, NewEgg currently has a deal on the GTX670 for $360 + Borderlands 2.
