Long time lurker, first time poster:

I just went to circuit city to pick up a DVD, but the doors were closed. The manager met me at the door and explained that all Circuit Cities across the nation aren't opening till 3:00 today. An apology, he gave me a flyer for a free gift card when I return:

Spend $5-99 - free $5 GC
$100-$499 - free $10 GC
$500-999 - free $50 GC
$1000 and above $100 GC

Pretty hot deal to spend $5 and get a $5 GC.

Only good on purchases made between today and 3/8/03.

That's because there's rumors that instead of paying out commission, they are converting to Hourly/Salary.
That would suck big time for all the sales people, but good for us consumers!!!

yeah baby!!

Do you have to have the flyer to get the GC? Or is it for anyone who purchases something?

Pretty sure you have to have the flyer. It says, "Please accept this gift for any inconvenience caused by our delayed store opening . . ."

It's official. At least CNN reported it as such.

They also cut 2k jobs today. That sucks, CC was always better for service because their sales staff was commissioned and eager to help. Now they will turn into mindless drones who care little about selling or helping the customer (a.k.a. BestBuy sales people).

This may get the company more money immediately, but I don't think it's going to help them in the long run.

I personally think it is better for us if they were on commission. Back when Best Buy first opened, they were on commission. I used to get some really great deals in the early years of Best Buy... Commissioned sales people have a lot more power to give you deals than hourly's do. You can often bargan with commissioned sales people. You can also play them off eachother (if one doesn't give you a deal, the next one might).

Journeyed down to the Willow Grove, Pa one today to pick up my $9.99 internet order (a closed out Satellite Dish installation kit including a 6 ft S-VHS cable, 75' of RG-6 Coax, a tube of silicon sealant and a compass amongst a ton of other high grade and useful stuff) and saw that they were closed. I was enraged and began banging on the plate glass window really, really long and really, really hard until a CC guy came out and gave me the $5 off dealy, along with his nervous and profuse apologies.

This afternoon, they took $5.30 (w/tax) off my $10 bill.

Longest. Sig. EVER.

That's always a good way to get CC folks to do what you want: threaten to break down their plate glass window. Heh. Great story... Maybe I should try that myself ...

I work at circuit city. All rumors are true, they fired the entire commission workforce except for 4 people in my location (which is one of the biggest there is). They then distributed all the hourly people to cover all of the department. I got a raise

On second thought - I remember this. A time when the BB salespeople would just straight up try to cut you a deal on stuff. A sales guy at BB one time tried to bargain with me by bringing the price down on a big screen TV until it was low enough that I might buy it, and the only interest I had in the TV was that I accidentally caught a glimpse of it.

well i dont think it will be good for consumers because they switched to hr/salary.
i used to remember working in retail, that when you see a customer you would head the other way.
why work harder then the rest when you are all getting paid the same.
and no need to hustle and help customers when the money is going into your pockets.

I also work at Circuit City and we all found out today that the position of Commisioned Sales Counselor was terminated and replaced with the roll of Product Expert, two people in my location got fired because I heard that anyone making over 20 dollars an hour (average hourly rate per commisioned sales counselor) was going to be let go because CC refused to pay them anymore than that. All of the commisioned staff except for them is staying at least for the meantime, I, as an associate will miss the days of where an hour of work could make up for an entire week off, but will look forward to getting a constant pay check! I don't really think that guest service (yes, CC is switching from Customer to Guest, thanks to Target no doubt) will be hampered by this, because they are paying me a very nice hourly salary and if my sales fall, my job is gone...period.

I used to work for CCity. The reason why sales conselours didn't care when you purchased cd's, dvd's and software is because they didn't get paid for it. Infact, it would hurt their total volume sales and in the long run, they make less money. Here's the breakdown from what i remember.

1. Accessories (Monster cable, USB cables etc. ) 20% commission

2. TV, VCR, Camcorders, Dig. Cameras, DVD players etc. 5%

3. Computers, Monitors, Printers etc. 1%

The reason why they push cables a lot is because it pays them a lot more. And we all know how expensive monster cable stuff is.

This is a basic outline:

- Accessories (Cables, Surge Protectors, etc.): 10%

- Products (Depends on area): 1.6%-5.4%

- Extended Warranty: 15%

That's basically how it pans out, no money on software, DVD's, Video Games, or CD's
