I bought the following computer a while ago and waited for some game/application to come out and force me to buy something new and it came out - Battlefield 2 Demo.
I dont know if it didnt run on my pc because of drivers or things like that but even if it did,
it would have done that real bad.

This is my current pc:
-Asus P4S533-M
-P4 2.0Ghz (i dont even know its FSB probably <533)
-RAM 512MB GEIL DDR 400MHZ
-WD 40GB 8MB CACHE
-Quantum 20GB (from my pentium III )
-GeForce 3 Ti 200 (Wow! lol)

-------------------------------------------------------------

And i want to make a big improvement:
-Gigabyte GA-8I915P-Pro (not sure about this one)
-x2 RAM 256MB GEIL DDR 400MHZ (Dual Channel)
-P4 3.0GHz LGA-775
-Radeon X800 XL 256MB PCI-E

im messing around with 3D and play games.....
u think its better to stick with good old AGP? and 478?
what about the Radeon? need some tips

Thanks

I would recommend a nice Athlon64 setup, but since you didn't ask about that:

1. The X800XL is a very nice card. However, it only comes in PCI-E.

2. A Prescott on a Socket 478 runs very hot, and is really a dead end upgrade. You are severly limited on any future upgrades. You will soon pay a premium for socket 478 CPU's as Intel has ended production of them (the peformance ones anyways).

3. If you want a Prescott, stick with the LGA 775 version and get a nice heatsink to cool it.

@UsandThem
il stick with Intel's LGA 775 and a good heatsink a friend of mine has AMD and its walways running hot and fried itself twice :S

@Boa
i decided to go on 1024 RAM.
i have enough budget but i dont want to find myself spending cash on things that i dont need like hardrives for example i only have some games, 3DSMax and Photoshop.

so X800XL it is....

BTW, can u recommand a good heatsink?

Well if you're building a new system, there's no point in sticking with the older technologies - unless you're on a really tight budget of course. If you mess around with 3d and play games, I would probably suggest going with an Athalon 64 setup. Even the lesser AMD chips provide better performance than more expensive Intel chips. I would suggest the following:

AMD 64 3200+ "Venice" core (socket 939)
Nforce4 Ultra motherboard (I dont have any experience with what manufacturer/model to choose from, so someone else will probably give a suggestion)
2x512MB of DDR memory (2x256 isn't enough nowadays - especially since soon they're going to push beyond 1GB in games)
X800XL PCI-E (good choice)

just remember to get a good power supply, that's very important!

If you have more of a budget, or want to stick to intel, I can suggest something else as well

edit - I thought I was going to be the first to reply, but it looks like there's more answers!

ur friend did sumthing wrong than as you can see in the forums alot of people have AMD64's there is no point to getting a Intel at this point unless you do video encoding. if your a gamer which i think you are just from telling ur graphics card you are gonna want to get a AMD64 end of story look at the benchmarks huge diff.

For gaming you really should get AMD. It would be cheaper, overclock well and outperform Intel by far.

If your overclocking get an XP-90 w/ Panaflo 92mm fan. If your not overclocking just stick with stock (I am refering to an AMD system here since that is the obvious better choice)

The reason BF2 didnt run is because of the GF3 card, its not supported. Your current P4 is an "A" version with 400 Mhz FSB.

You could drop in a P4b 3.06 (533 fsb) in your current mobo but youre probably better off doing the whole mb/cpu/vpu upgrade unless you can find one super cheap. And youll still need a new vid card. PCIe is the way to go.

PS Welcome to the forums!

Athlon64's actually run much cooler than Prescott's.

However, some of the best CPU coolers are:

Zalman

XP-90

XP-120

Sorry, the last two don't work with LGA 775, but if you went with AMD

Well, not without an adapter anyways: Adapter
