From CNN:

The new school's principal, William Salzman, said the school will ... specialize in computer technology, arts and culinary arts.

I was thinking the same exact thing. Why are homosexuals being given benefits the rest of us arent? How is this any different then if someone opened a white only, or male only, or straight only HS... which undoubtedly would catch major heat for doing so. I'm sure there would be protests, people would be trying to sue... people who didn't fit in with the crowd attending the school would try to get in.

if there is enough students who are going to attend, i dont see a problem with it, and the point about there being gay math is idiotic, if you think that school is just there for academics you are stupid, a very valuable social education is gained in school too. gays, trannys and such probably have a terrible time in school from the social aspect of it, if they can do better in a school where homophobs cant bother them then i dont see the problem.

I understand its not easy for some of them, but isn't that a better social education then what they would get at all all homosexual school? Wouldn't that just be softening them up for a blow when they enter the real world? To me the better social education would be to accept their sexual preference, suck it up and learn to live with it in a diverse society where no one has the same preferences. Show them their choice to have a same sex partner should have no impact on their interactions with straight people, and that it should have absolutely no influence on their ability to get an education?

Unfortunately, many people don't have such an enlightened attitude towards gays. If they want to have a safe environment in which they're not going to be harassed by straight students and they can associate with other gays, then I'm all for it.

I'm not gay myself, but I got picked on mercilessly in school for being no more than being a geek with glasses and a hearing problem. I would have gladly attended a separate school for people like myself if it had meant I could learn in a safe environment.

So you're saying that in a perfect world, everyone who is a little different gets their own "members-only" society? Geeks go here, jocks go there. Gays go over this way. We won't even draw a parallel to race, as that's a whole different flame war. Sounds like segregation to me.

It's a public school, right? So how can it be all gay? If it's a public school it can't discriminate in student types!

no offense but thats FVCKED UP...

i dont people have choice in being gay or not, but most scientific evidence concludes that its a learned behavior (environmental not genetic) and hence can be undone (freundian outlook). If you like the lifestyle, deal with it. If you dont, get help

If that was not you i apologize.

See, now that explains everything. Good thing they have these Magnet schools in Texas, just for the geeks. The geeks were so tired of getting harassed and beaten in other schools.

Now everybody will no where to go to beat these kids up after school..I think its a good idea that will have bad repercussions..

What a STUPID concept...my brother is gay and he didn't know until he was an adult....and even if he had known sooner that did not meant that he wanted to be singled out and taught in a different school...he wanted to be with his friends in a normal school.

I think seperating people because of their sexual preference is even more stupid than seperating people because of their colour.

You presuppose that sexual preference is not genetic.

It has neither been proven that it is genetic nor psychological. Until something is proven, I choose to believe that homosexuality is a choice.

Agreed
I got my share of heat in highschool... who didn't? Fvck these kids, they need to get their heads out of their arses before they get them stuck under the front bumper of my V8 injected lifestyle that separates me from that BS in the first place.

You cant get away from "haters" and other low-lives without soaring so high, so fast that they can't touch you. The special school is BS. The taxpayer money in it "however so small-" <cough> up yours too buddy </cough> guess he wasnt a tax payer!

Someone tell these kids to grow up, becuase anyone wanting to be in this school for the express purpose of being away from the heteros is exactly as has been discussed: "a wanker."

I dont care if your gay. If I see you making out on the street, I will honk at you... mabye give you a little "harassment" and some really vulgar words from the bottom of my heart. If you wanna discuss it more, you can take a bite out of my insecurity and eat my glock... I'm hetero on my own time, be homo on yours. Is that so hard? Dont you think none of this would be an issue if everyone just kept it at home, regardless of sexuality?

So, if you kiss your girlfriend in public, you deserve to be harrassed? By having a gun pointed at you?

Oh yeah. I make out with my girlfriend in public all of the time. I love making a scene and imposing my sexuality on other people.

It goes two ways. I'm not saying I'm going to shoot anyone over kissing in public or anything, I'm just saying keep it clean and to yourself. When people have that little respect for other people to impose their sexuality, homo or hetero on the people around them, they deserve whatever comes at them. I can just thank karma or something that I don't have to put up with crap like that on a daily basis... It's one of the benefits to being driven to overcome. :sun:

Its a lot more than I can say for anyone who needs to go to a special school not to be picked on because they feel the need to make their private lives public. And yes "wankers" like that should be shot. So should all of the people who call themseves "pimps" and use the "bling-bling" lingo, or use fundamentalisim in place of logic and reason... but thats another thread

Don't gay people want to be treated as equals?

When is straight High gonna open and when is the I am straight and proud parade gonna be?

Here is an idea, if you want to blend in with the crowd DON'T GO OUT OF YOUR WAY TO STAND OUT.

Not an anti-gay person or anything but come on already.

To those of you who are tempted to be swayed by jOjO316 and FFMCobalt's assertions that being gay is a choice... I am gay, and no it is not a choice. Yes in fact, I can look back with an adult eye and recognize innocent feelings back when I was very young indicating so. I was not sexually abused by a priest, bishop, my father, uncle or any other male. I also was not doted on by my mother. This holds true for most of my gay friends as well. I just had to offer this more enlightened view from someone who has more personal experience to offer than "just because I choose to think this".

To get on topic, I have mixed feelings about this school. Granted, I had a difficult time in high school because I was gay. I knew it then, but didn't fit the 'flamer' stereotype so I didn't really get bullied because of it. The worst thing I had to deal with was the girls choice dances.... My friends were straight. I was unwilling to come out of the closet, so I felt a lot of pressure to date and 'compete' with the girls as they did. For me, this was not easy and left me with a guilty feeling. I shouldn't have been doing that to the girls. Anyway, to make this long story shorter, I missed out on a lot of the social aspects that most others received during that time in my life and added a lot of stresses that shouldn't have been there. This took a lot of energy that I could have applied to academics both during high school and after.

I guess I look at this the same way I look at affirmative action. It's an imperfect solution for a minority that the majority refuses to healthily include.

Please point me to some references (scientific, not Southern Baptist) to support this.

Umm. I think all public schools are already 'straight high'. Ask any gay student and I'm sure they will feel that they are the visitor.

100 student, two classroom school can not provide the same level of education a typical high school can offer without spending unbelievable amount of money.

A new high school for 100 students. What a joke.

So do the nerds and geeks who always get picked on but I've never seen a separate school made for them

actually i thought that was what most private schools were.

Actually a LOT of private schools are not "smart". My best friend has friends who live next to him and they go to a private school...and they are all idiots it is quite amazing. I've heard soooo many stories that my friend's friend told us its ridiculous.

For example: Once their Chemistry teacher was sick so the had a subsitute was actually normally a public highschool teacher but he subbed for private school for 3 days. Anyway they went in and he started to teach according to where the sick teacher told to start and he noticed something - all the students were doing it COMPLETELY WRONG.

It turns out that they had learned everything COMPLETELY WRONG and he told us "That sub told us our teacher was full of $h|t if he really taught us that" and he spent all three days just trying to correct as much as he could....

Nevertheless the teacher came back and he has no idea if the new stuff he is learning is right or wrong...

And this isn't only where I live now - I've lived in Ventura, CA and Fort Collins, CO and I've heard stuff like this...

EDIT 2:

Before I get flamed from academics who attended CalTech and a private high school I don't think that Private Schools are any better than public schools.
And I don't beleive public is any better than private....

I got lucky and attended a elementary school right next to Colorado State University and our school all the time had football players coming over and playing with us at lunch and we got extra programs and money for computers (we got all our apple 2es replaced with Power Macs when I was in 3rd grade I beleive Actually it was a biznitch for me to understand Windows 95 because I was soooo used to Mac)....my junior high/ middle school (I attended both b/c I moved) were nothing special...and my HS was nothing special until I moved and 11t/12th grade attend a REALLY good public highschool...

So i guess I've seen great public schools and bad ones - just like how there are prolly great private schools and horrible ones...

But seriously - imagine being at a graduation and the crowd starts cheering because the Valedictorian got a 1200 on her SATs....

Fvck that. GROW UP. Stand up for yourself. If you choose to live your life a certain way, then you'd better be prepared to handle people who don't agree and bully you over it. It's part of growing up.

OMFG, I agree, with, YOU!
