First time in Las Vegas

My wife and I are going to Las Vegas for 4 days in February. Never been before, could use some suggestions on what to do there. We live right outside of Atlantic City, so gambling isn't a big deal, kind of too old for partying all night, and I'm not into shows like Wayne Newton or Celine Dionne. Any suggestions? I think Penn and Teller have a regular show out there, something like that would interest us both. Also, I've always heard that the food is incredibly cheap, any suggestions on where to eat? Oh, and the wife says the Bunny Ranch is out...

We don't plan on renting a car, just staying on the Strip, so sightseeing stuff like the Hoover Dam is out. Any info on special deals or freebies would be appreciated also.

You could visit Hoover Dam, about 30 min drive iirc. I always regretted not doing a flight to the GC.

Food used to be cheap, now its pretty expensive. Tons of shows to see, also expensive. Gambling might be the cheapest thing in Vegas now that I think about it.

oh, check out the thrill rides ontop of the stratosphere.

I'm moving there next Monday.

Penn & Teller is at the Rio! The Rio buffet is really something else too. Be sure to check out the Voo-Doo Lounge too.

Bunny Ranch... Just remember, prostitution is illegal in Clark County, which basically means anywhere outside of Vegas proper you can find those services. The Mustang Ranch was turned into a real mustang ranch. I wonder if it's open to the public?

Alright, some suggestions before I go to sleep:

The strip is a lot bigger than it looks... so you might want to consider taking a taxi or something. I walked last time I was there... something like 2 miles and I didn't even get to the end. I would also suggest seeing some shows. I saw Cirque Du Soleil's KA at the hotel I stayed at, the MGM Grand. Awesome show. I also saw Lance Burton's magic show, which was really good as well. We got lucky with front row seats and got in on a surprise filming by Chriss Angel. I would also check out New York New York. I rode the roller coaster that's there... kind of expensive, but it was pretty cool and it was a good ride. There are also some good restaurants in there as well.

Voo-Doo Lounge: I'm guessing this is a bar?

Just FYI get a bus pass on "The Deuce." It is like $4 for a 24 hour pass and goes up and down the strip and down all the way to fremont. You might also go down to Fremont street for a night. It is pretty cool there is like a mile long screen going over the top of the street. Here is a video of it: Here

I've been 3 times. My suggestions:

1) Go see the Grand Canyon. You don't need a car. Take one of the many tours that will get you there. Some will take you to a small airport and fly you to the canyon. It's worth it.
2) Go see Hoover Dam. I'd rent a car just for this. Driving around Vegas is not that difficult, and though there are a lot of mass transit options and it's walkable, it really is a lot more fun with a car.
3) Go to some restaurants off the strip. This is more reason to get a car. Ferraro's is one of my favorites. It's an Italian spot. Rosemary's has a tasting menu, but it wasn't as good as it used to be the last time I was there. It might still be worth a shot.
4) Drinks are free in most casinos. Kick back, maybe gamble a bit, enjoy the drinks. Not everyone knows this, surprisingly.
5) Go see Ka, "O", Mystere or something similar. "O" is a fantastic show, in my opinion. It's well worth it. The showgirl shows like Jubilee are, imo, not at all enticing unless you're into the dancing aspects. Yes, looking at boobs for a few hours gets really old.

Hmm, I ran out of ideas. My primary recommendation would be to get a car. You'll limit yourself too much if you don't. It's nice to see the other side of Vegas.

Lol, I remember last time I lived there back in 2000... Fremont was the 'nastier' part of town, back when they still had a hooker problem there.

Vegas in general has a street walker problem. Once the sun sets there are a whole shit load of street walkers on the strip.

Penn and Teller is at the Rio, and that's not along the strip. A car is required for that one. If you want nice mom-pop food, then a car is absolutely required. The food all along the strip is expensive. Food used to be cheap w/ crappy cheap buffets; that's no longer the case.

Fremont experience is rather nice. I believe they have tours of hoover dam, so a car wouldn't be required for that one.

Descartes has a good post, so follow his tips as well. If you're into snowboarding, there's actually a small ski resort about an hour or so out. Barely anyone is there. I love going to that resort. Arg, I forgot what it's called.

This.

Exactly. It's not called Sin City for nothing. If you're not getting inebriated in some way and not having sex, then you're not having fun in Vegas. I wish, out of the countless times I've gone, that I was sober enough to see Penn and Teller cus I think they're hilarious but hell, losing hundreds of dollars and not remembering any of it is what Vegas is all about.

I'll also recommend KA. Only cirque show I saw, but it is hands down the coolest thing I have ever seen. When I go back, I will make sure I have a cirque show scheduled every night.
