I would like to try and overclock my cpu for the first time and need to know how to go about it.

I have:
T-Bird 900mhz w/Super ORB
Abit KT7
PC133 256 RAM
Geforce 2 32MB DDR
SB x-gamer
80mm intake fan and slot fan

I run low 30's at idle and about 45C after playing UT for the CPU and about 27C-38C for the case.

I have seen sites that have this type of info, but which is the best and where do I start?

I dont want to go crazy, probably only up to 1Ghz or so.

Any suggestions welcome

not to sound rude, but my first suggestion is to get a new HSF. i dont like orbs, unless its a blorb for the northbridge..thats the only one i like =) i dont think they are very good HSF's, or thats what ive heard.

The Orb isn't the best thing out there, but I think that it deserves some respect, it's not like it doesn't get the job done. Up to about 1.1GHz, it's fine. It doesn't cool as well as the Taisol, GlobalWin or Alpha, but it's alright.

MUSTANG: You shouldn't have any problems overclocking with that thing, although if you want to go beyond 1.1GHz, you may want a new HSF.

Thats probably as high as I would go. What is the easist way to get to 1Ghz with out major headaches?

First try upping FSB to 110(gonna get 990Mhz). If not, you need to unlock CPU multiplier(connect L1 bridges on CPU). Then you will be able to run it at 1000(10X100). SuperOrb is more than enough(I have it and under heavy load I get 44C).

Upping your FSB as high it will go. Should be around 110. Unless you get 112 or higher, you'll be slightly short, but almost there . If that's a no-go (say, it maxes out at 108), then you'll want to try either 10x100, or something like 9.5x106... Basically, I would first find the max FSB, then go with X x 100 until I found the max speed the chip would hit, then back off the multiplier and increase the FSB.

So if I up the FSB, do I need to adjust anything with the RAM? What is going to happen when I reach the limit with the FSB. Is it going to lock up? Then just go back into the BIOS and turn it down a notch?

OK guys, I DID IT! My very first OverClock! I am at 914mhz! Wooooohooooooo!

My temps are at 32, 28 with winamp and a few windows open. So im sure everything is OK. All I did was move the CPU FSB/PCI CLOCK up from 100/33mhz to 101/33 mhz. The next step is 103/34mhz. What is the difference in MHZ? Is it really that simple at these low overclock levels? Is there any thing i have to keep an eye on besides the temps?

After I max out the FSB, then do I move on the the multiplier? Does it move up in whole numbers, or can it ba a fraction like 9.5x100? Every time that i go too far, its just going to not boot or lock up somewhere and then I just turn it down a notch? Is this correct?

Thanks alot guys.....

MUSTANG347:

To answer your question, the Frequency Multiple goes up in 0.5 increment... like 8, 8.5, 9.0, etc....

But before you can adjust the Multiple, you need to unlock your CPU since the Multiple setting is locked by AMD... visit osage's link to see how to unlock...

THANKS BCYL,
that is what i was waiting for. So then i am going have to use the pencil trick or something like that?

Which is safer on the hardware? FSB OCing or Multiplier OCing?

Multiplier OCing is safer on the hardware. If you up the FSB it drives your whole system harder. But if all of your hardware is relatively new I don't think there is any harm to be done. Multiplier OCing ups the performance of the processor only, but FSB is for the whole system.

And I used the window defroster kit to connect my bridges. Much more secure than the pencil trick, and relatively permanent. Be patient and careful if you do it.

Yeah, I'm trying to connect L1 bridges with defogger repair kit using a toothpick.
My question is how many times should I draw(?) lines with it. I know you usually draw the line 2 or 3 times with about 1 minute interval on actual car window. Should I follow the same step?
How long does it take for this to be completely dried?
And Mustang.
Sorry to add questions on your thread.
Thanks.

Just did mine two days ago..
Once is enough..
It drys qucik, keep the tooth pick clean with razor as it builds up fast

For the newbies like me this is what you need

Call a auto parts store and ask Loctite Rear Window Defogger Grid Repair Kit.. $12

Get a Tooth Pick, Magnifing Glass, Table Lamp and large book (phone book)to prop up you arm..

Put lamp on kitchen table get some news paper and shave tooth pick with razor to fine point, put L1 bridges on far side of you and draw line away from you.. If you cross bridges (like I did, connected L1 to L3's Dah) get the razor and scraped the conductive paint off... I thought I killed it, Thank you god!

Thanks.
I got the repair kit already.
I'll draw the line tomorrow.
And if you do make a mistake, you can wipe it off with alcohol, and start over. It won't damage the chip, unless it's powered.
Thanks again.
