On the contrary my friend, starting with cheap shit allows you to better appreciate the good stuff.

A bad spirit can unfairly put off to a style that would have tasted great if you'd spent the money for something good.

Meh, I like Jameson as a sippin' liquor.

OP, I see that you went with Crown Royal - fine choice if you're going to mix it with a soft drink. Incidentally that was the first booze I bought at a liquor store though I was 17 at the time and slightly underage. Captain Morgan is also a good choice for mixing with Coke. Hell, if you're going to mix it doesn't matter much what you get at all...

Are you buying for your apartment/house or just for your own consumption? If buying just for yourself, I'd get a bottle of vodka - Smirnoff if mixing or one of the higher end bottles to drink straight or in a Martini. A bottle of rum - I like the anejo golden rums with coke. And a bottle of a good liquer - say Amaretto Di Saronno or maybe Frangelico. Personally I would skip the vodka and get Tanqueray as Im partial to a nice Tanqueray and tonic with lime.

If your buyin as a "host" for when/if you have guests who may like a drink, then the Vodka (Smirnoff), a bottle of Rum (Bacardi light or gold) and a bottle of Jack. You can make a number of mixed drinks with those three basics.

Jameson just tastes like alcohol to me, very bland and not much flavor. I bought a bottle a few years ago, and I ended up using it for grilling. I couldn't bring myself to drink it with the other choices in my cabinet :^D

Give 1800 Anejo tequila a try if you have about $40 to spend. You'll never touch Quervo again ;^)

That sounds about right :^D

For years I didn't think I liked tequila, as my only experience was with Cuervo. The stuff tastes like ass. After having a few good brands I'm now a firm fan. I prefer scotch and Irish, but tequila is a very close third. When it's made right, it's absolutely sublime.

$40... hmm. Pack of Guinness, bottle of Kahlua, a brandy of some kind, decent whiskey, econo vodka, 2 buck chuck at Trader Joe's.

They don't sell beer at liquor stores here. But they sell it everywhere else. That's the best part about living in the microbrew capital of the world.

cheap stuff should be about $40.

Bourbon/whiskey, vodka, and tequila would be great starts.

Personally, I'm a whiskey/bourbon and tequila person. The only way you'll know is to try. You could also get multiple of the smaller sized bottles they keep behind the counter (like 3 shots worth per bottle).

Tequila goes a long way towards silencing challenges in a bar too. The only downside is running into someone who likes shooting tequila. Those nights generally end poorly.

I like a good scotch to sip on myself. I bought a bottle of Johnny Walker green label last spring that I tap into occasionally and love it. Tastes great and gives you a very satisfying warm feeling inside!

Edit: Forgot about Bushmills after my buddy moved to AZ. I might have to make that my conquest this weekend!

Ignore all recommendations, you are making the perfect choice for a first trip to the liquor store.

jameson + rocks = fantastic

(bushmills is better)

Go with Powers instead... cheaper and WAY better than either Jameson or Bushmills. Pot still all the way

Powers is very good. I like it better than Bushmills not not as well as Black Bush. Red Breast is an excellent pot still that's richer than Powers. It vies with Black Bush for my favorite Irish.
