this is also not a bad idea, but around here for $40 you wont get much, and it wont be good

but still, good liquors and beers (and wine) are quite enjoyable even if youre not drinking to get drunk

Have you drank before? I would think it is pretty clear to buy what you like already.
Then pick up a bottle of CRISTAL!

Vladimir is beyond terrible. Kids used to get that stuff all the time back my freshman year. Never again.

Ignore all recommendations, you are making the perfect choice for a first trip to the liquor store.

jameson + rocks = fantastic

(bushmills is better)

Go with Powers instead... cheaper and WAY better than either Jameson or Bushmills. Pot still all the way

never had or seen it, must not be available locally.

?? It's released by the same distiller as Jameson.

Give 1800 Anejo tequila a try if you have about $40 to spend. You'll never touch Quervo again ;^)

i will try some of that next time then! i dont have a lot of experience with tequila, i think ive had some hornitos? or something...

so the only difference between scotch and burboun is that one is from scottland and the other is from kentucky right?

and what about brandy? what is it? and whats a good brand?

im not too into vodka due to bad experiences in the past, but i want to give kettle one a try

Rum is my drink of choice.
For mixing, I buy Cruzan. Much better than Bacardi and still cheap.
A step up is Appleton or Mt Gay.
Whatever you do, don't buy Bacardi. That stuff is horribly overpriced garbage.

Go to the store with a credit card.

Find the case with a lock on it; pick out three bottles of varying sizes and colors.

Ask the clerk to get them for you and pay with the credit acrd. Do NOT look at the total on the reciept until you're hung over the next day.

Jim Beam Black label......best stuff ever. (I like it better than Crown)

My bang for the buck lineup:

Bourbon: Old Taylor. Notably better than Jim Beam for 2/3 the price. I actually prefer it to Maker's Mark (more than double the price), as MM has too much green banana for my taste. If OT is unavailable, Old Crow is a step down, but still great value.

Canadian Whiskey: Crown or Forty Creek. Crown is smoother, Forty Creek is more complex and flavorful. If you want to go cheap, try Black Velvet.

Vodka: Sobieski or Smirnoff Black Cherry.

Rum: Admiral Nelson Spiced Rum. Comparable with Captain Morgan, but cheaper. Step up: Sailor Jerry or Captain Morgan Private Stock.

Scotch: Grant's. Smooth, flavorful, balanced, cheap. Gotta spend much more to get anything significantly better. Ballantines is about equal, but has more iodine, which is more of an acquired taste...J&B is my choice for the next step up. For a mixer, try Schweppes Ginger Ale.

Irish: Nearly flavorless to me. I'd rather just buy Scotch.

Tennessee Whiskey: George Dickel. Smoother and cheaper than JD. If you want the charcoal flavor but not the price tag, Heaven Hill Bourbon is more Tennessee than Kentucky. Only (barely) drinkable mixed.

Tequila: I don't know anything about tequila

Beer: Michelob Amber Bock or Boulevard Wheat are good choices for an inexperienced drinker. Flavorful and engaging without getting in your face. From there, consider Bass Ale, Shiner Bock, Sierra Nevada Wheat, or Optimator (careful with the alcohol content). If you want something goofy, Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat literally tastes like the milk left over after a bowl of Froot Loops. I'm not joking.

Wine: I don't know anything about wine, but I actually like the orange flavored MD 20/20.
Gotta be careful with it, though :Q

Brandy: Brandy is basically alcohol-fortified wine. It's okay, but it doesn't hit my switches.

Crown isn't a bad choice, it was one of my personal favorites for a while and I still enjoy it. I personally recommend trying out Maker's Mark if you are a whiskey fan. Also the best suggestion I can make to you, to anyone really, is try out Jim Beam Red Stag. It's 80 proof black cherry bourbon. It's not too expensive (about $20 for a .75 liter bottle) and it's some of the yummiest stuff ever. It mixes great with coke too.

My last trip to the liquor store:
Cruzan rum
Sauza blanco tequila
Vodka Monopolowa
Ice 101 peppermint schnapps

All recommendations of my favorite liquor store owner, who steers me to the better of the affordable booze.

Guinness, preferably extra stout. If you want something milder, go with Blue Moon. These are beers (just in case you're that much of a noob ).

ugh, the cheap spiced rum is awful, and i dont even like it in coke very much, but its passable.

i do like Capt Morgans Private Stock, but id practically never mix it.

Admiral Nelson Spiced Rum!!! He even out ranks the capt!!!! Cheaper and taste the same.

Im not to into expensive stuff. After a couple you can't taste anymore anyhow. I tried to drink some gray goose this weekend had to switch though. To expensive and taste the same as sky to me.

uh get some captain morgan blakc. That stuff is strong lol

1 ¼ oz. Ketal One Vodka
¾ oz Nocello Walnut Liqueur
¾ oz Bailey's Irish Cream
¼ oz Butterscotch Schnapps
1 scoop Peanut Butter
1 oz Simple Syrup
1.5 oz Heavy Whipping Cream

Edit: I was searching on some crap we found in the liquor store bargain bin when I was in college - peanut brittle schnapps. I couldn't find it but I found the concoction above. I think the puke would crystallize in your nose were you try to get drunk on it.

That sounds delicious and nauseating at the same time. Like a hamburger made of ground bacon- just too much. Ick, just reading all the super-sweet ingredients is making me ill...but that's what the flu'll do for ya
