is there some kind of fish that's the economical equivilent of ground sirloin, that you can toss on the grill sorta like a hamburger, that would make a tasty sandwich (like a hamburger)?

I could go with veggie burgers but it bothers me that they come out of the box looking grilled already.. it doesn't seem so much like real food.

what do you feed fish-eating vegetarians when you're feeding everybody else hamburgers and potato salad and fruit salad and chips?

Salmon steak-burger (though others will want it then).

Really any sort of fish on the bbq is easy, and can be slapped in a bun.

My wifes a pseudo-vegetarian, so I cook a lot of fish.

My BBQ fish recipe is simple:

1x Whole Rainbow trout, gutted. stuffed with garlic , ginger and a mixed herb salad, wrap in foil cook, for 20 mins - serve with potato salad..

If weather turns bad just stick in over for 20mins instead - Always a winner

heh.. I'm thinkin' that while all the other suggestions would feed my fish-eaters nicely, this is the only one that would actually fit my budget.. I need to feed these fish-eating vegetarians sammiches that are of similar cost to the actual hamburgers I'm feeding the easy to feed people. I need dollar a sammich fish sammiches, because that's what I'm going to get out of the meat. I don't care who eats what but because this is the third and least expensive feeding frenzy I'm hosting in a 2 day period.. I need to keep to that dollar of meat/sammich thing.

friend suggested I grill portobello mushrooms instead of fish for 'em. I may go with that.

I wouldn't have any problem coming up with fish to grill if I was doing a general steak ribs chicken fish bbq type thing but what I'm aiming for here is a burgers and hotdogs cookout, with something equivilent for the non-carnivores. it needs to go on a bun, when it comes off the grill!

I want equality of food, but suitable food.. for everyone. mushroom sammiches is looking more and more like the way to go.

IMO tuna is the best grilling fish, and makes stellar sandwiches. Swordfish also does well on a grill. Unfortunately both are a lot more expensive than burgers.

you could make salmon patties much like you would make some meat loaf. grill them on one of those vegetable mats so that they don't fall through.

I might even could find ready-made salmon patties, if I go to the fish market.. I can grill those? cool. thanks.

it may turn out I only need to feed one vegetarian and she'll be happy with veggies and cheese on a bun if I have good bread (it'll be good bread ) good cheese (it'll be good cheese ) and a good avocado (avocados are so.. iffy..) but the ones I'm not sure about will want ::something:: grilled on their sammiches.

heh.. I'm becoming more and more apathetic as the night goes on.. if I had to decide right this second they'd all get papa johns. my refrigeration limits may make it come to that yet. we're going to do mexican fiesta the night before.. with stuff for the meat eaters and stuff for the fish eaters and stuff in both categories for the non-dairy folks.. that and brunch in the morning may make papa john my new best friend by dinnertime..

Grilled tuna is soooo good. Just get a nice thick slice, marinate it for a bit then sear it so that the inside is still raw. Delicious!
