A better question would be how doesn't it benefit your body. The benefits of fish oil range from help with fat loss, inflammation, cardiovascular health, depression, better brain function, etc. Just do a quick google search and you'll find a bunch of results.
As for amount, the minimum you should get is 6g. A standard capsule has 180mg EPA and 120mg DHA, so 6 caps would be 1020mg EPA and 720mg DHA for a total of 1.8g. I take 10g a day for a total of 3g combined DHA/EPA. There's no point in going over 10g because plasma saturation of DHA tops off at 1.2 grams a day (which is 10g). If you're using capsules with a different ratio of EPA/DHA, take however many pills will make you fall between 1.8-3g total and you should be good. There's no point in going over that and excessive amounts can impair immune function.

How do you afford taking so many? I take about 4 a day because it's pretty expensive. Got any online sources that could lighten the financial burden?

I have the NatureMade kind fish oil. I'm only taking 4 capsules per day. How many should I take to take advantage of the full benefits? I'm no doctor or chemist, so I've no idea. On the back it just says the amount of Omega-3 Fatty acid is about 720 mg per serving which is 2 capsules.

I would suggest 5-8 capsules a day. I actually have a bottle of the same stuff right now and am taking 8 per day.

Is there any risk of overdose if you take too much fish oil?

By fish oil, do you all mean cod liver oil and such? Or is there a specific "fish oil" supplement.

Can you overdose on calories? Not really... They're just fats, not vitamins or anything.
