so another question...
i lost a lot of line last weekend and need more line.
i'm looking to get some good quality line this time and not go cheap. the line i had prior was like $7 for a spool, some type of spider web brand with a purple box.
i'm going to be going after small and large mouth bass primarily, so i'm thinking like 8-12lb test maybe. but as far as brand stuff goes, what do you recommend?
also, i simply tie my hook to the line. i've been having pretty successful results with that but is using a leader line preferred?
thanks.
Ho-boy, you're opening a big can of worms about what line to use.
1) Yes, always tie your lure/hook directly, never use leaders unless you need to. Now I'm talking about the pre-packaged leaders with clips/swivels, unless you're going for a muskie/pike or something you need a steel leader on, avoid. The lure and feel won't work.
2) A "real" leader. This would be used with the line of your choice to your hook/lure and then joined to your main line either directly or with a swivel. The purpose of this leader is so the fish don't see your line, you MUST use a leader with braid or other high strength/low flex line, fish can see that. I prefer a direct uni knot to join leader/mainline, every guide fishing I've been on that's what they use.
For what you're doing, stick to 8 or 10 pound mono or flurocarbon, don't mess with fancy line, you don't need to. We've pulled in many a 25+ pound fish on 12 pound mono (12 pound is for big fish, you'll have a tough time even breaking it). I'd suggest you try some 8 pound flurocarbon because it has great feel and little stretch.
Oh, and respool your reels at least once a season. I believe I even posted in this thread that line color matters, it does.
Really, for what you're doing...keep it simple stupid (KISS)
