so another question for you guys...

a lake i've been going to i've noticed some HUGE fish that i can see the shadow of. like 2-3 feet long or so. yesterday i saw a school of like 10 of them, just chillin. when i threw my lures around there, they didn't even bat an eye at it, or they just moved to another spot. then i would throw it to the new spot and same thing. i was chasing them around for like an hour with no luck at all. well i did have one big hit on a tube bait, but i think it was a bass.

i'm pretty sure the other big fish were carp but not 100%.

and my question to you all is how the f do you catch a carp? i was doing a little research and heard that good old corn on hooks works. i'm thinking of trying that next weekend when i go back, but i'm also curious what you all use to catch carp.

I'd just go with the corn. Throw a bit on your hook and throw a couple lines out there, and grab a handful and huck it out there next to your line. Wait. Profit. (assuming you consider carp minus the fight a profit, if you don't smoke them they're all but worthless). Fun as hell to catch though, quite a fight.

just doing catch and release.

thanks for the suggestion though.

also, what do you all use to target catfish? i know chicken liver can be used, and i've tried using it before, but what is the best way to actually rig it up on the hook? The chicken liver usually seems to not stay on very well since it's so soft/slippery/slimy.

Carp fish'in? Just tie on a River Rig with a circle hook and gob some night crawlers on the hook or you can buy some special stink bait.

Most people I've seen run it on live bait hooks or maybe treble hooks.

If you're just going after channels, just go with some stink bait, punch bait, or some stinky ball of goo that the local shops say to use. It's way less of a PITA and I think chicken livers are overrated. I'm sure local shops have some homebrew stuff that'd be worth trying. You won't get HUGE cats but you'll catch more and you'll probably see a few 3-5 pounders.

awesome info coming from you all!

also here is a pic of the 'shadows' i saw at the lake. i know it's hard to see them just because of the pic, but it was the best of the 5 pics i took.

i'm assuming those are carp but not 100%.

have you used these yourself? if so curious what your success rate was.

Yes it works. The first time was in the early 80's when my uncle was doing it. We would put a chunk on the hook and fish the side of the river with a bobber hanging from the middle of the fishing rod. Some times the current of the river would pull the bobber straight up so we had to user sinkers to hold it. When the bobber hit the top of the pole is when you set the hook. We did the bobber this way because we were fishing at night and easier to see it. Also if you want to get ghetto you can bend a stick/twig in half and use it as the bobber.

okay cool gotcha. if my brother or i have time to make these beforehand we will try them out. otherwise i'm just going to go the corn route. but we may try both.

i know it's hard as hell to tell from the pic i posted above, but do those shadows even look like carp to anyone? or do they look like something else? they reminded me of those large coy when i first saw them.

....as far as those mono leaders you are talking about, do stores like sports authority sell those? that is really the only place I have near me to pick up fishing stuff, and the one near me actually has a tiny/shitty fishing department heh.

Learning basic knot tying is the best thing a new fisherman can do. All the fancy tackle in the world won't catch fish if it's not properly attached, and the wrong knot can easily cut the actual breaking strength of any type line (braided, mono, fluorcarbon) in half. This link is excellent if you're new to fishing knots:

FISHING KNOT BASICS

A mono leader is just a smaller diameter length of monofilament knotted to your main line. You can buy 25 or 30 yard leader spools for about three bucks. If you're building leaders; use the Albright Special for joining lines of noticeably different diameters or materials (mono to braided for example) and the Blood Knot for lines that are close to the same diameter.

I picked up a new fly rod/reel combo yesterday from the local fly shop. Ended up with a 5wt Sage Flight rod, 5'6" 4pc, a G.Loomis Eastfork reel, and the owner threw in some SA Sharkskin fly line in with it. I cant wait to try it out this weekend.

I love how this rod casts compared to the Temple Fork Outfitters rod I was using, I ended up putting that whole setup on craigslist already.

was out fishing all day yesterday and today pretty much. yesterday was not very successful at all. caught a turtle on chicken liver (luckily it was easy to get off) and a pretty nice sized catfish on it too. but other than that really no bites or anything. my brother and bro in law didn't get anything.

today i got 6 bass though, and my bro and bro in law each got 1. found a really good spot and definitely going back there.

that was the only one picture worthy i caught today, pretty good size.

does anyone know what kind of lure this is or where to buy them?

http://i.imgur.com/jrRtG.jpg?1

my coworker let me borrow these and he said he catches a bunch of large mouth with these so I'm going to try it out this weekend. i'm just wondering if anyone knows the name of them or where to buy them, in case they start to work wonders.

EDIT:

found it on tacklewarehouse...

http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Poor_Boys_Blade_Bait/descpage-PBBLADE.html

pretty much identical it just does not have the eye on it.

Anyone have much experience with portable fly fishing rigs? I do a good bit of hiking and occasionally run across rivers with trout. It's not worth carrying a 'normal' fly rig but I'd love to find something I can have just in case.

I've used some of the more bulky '2 piece' rigs, but the other weekend I saw a guy fishing with a setup that's completely contained in a ~2ft tube, he was on the other side of the river or I would've found out where he purchased it.

i have never done fly fishing but have always been interested in it. is it mainly for catching trout in moving water?

Going out for some nighttime drift fishing tomorrow night. I'm sure I won't catch anything, but will be nice to be out on the water for a few hours (and not burning from the sun).

i'm probably going out tomorrow morning just to the lake I went to last week and got 6 small mouth bass. i have a football game at 1pm so i want to try and get up early to get at least a solid 4 hours in. hope i can actually do it heh.

i MAY go out tonight too but not sure.

If you want to catch some bass...use a setup like this...

http://www.wikihow.com/Texas-Rig-a-Plastic-Worm

If you are in vegetation...they work slick...no snags...just make sure you don't horse it around otherwise you will snag.

weeds are fine...just slowly jerk the bait through...pause and let it fall...try to make it look like an injured fish.

Lilly pads...I like to toss one of these setups on pads...and just bounce it across the tops...watching the water blow up is awesome.

I just got my first boat this past weekend...16 foot fishing craft...totally pumped to get it out on the water...need to get some electronics on it...man are those expensive!

that is primarily what i have been getting recently, as you can see from the pics i've posted in this thread.

i've also caught quite a bit on tube lures. the fish in the lakes i go to seem to like the light colored ones the most in general. i also have some lizards i'm going to try out this weekend.

however they are always small mouth bass so i'm looking to try and target large mouth bass. this guy who let me borrow these lures said he gets large mouth on this primarily but will get the occassional small mouth as well.

the lake i go in is supposed to have large mouth in it as well so i'm hoping to maybe reel one in.

My dad has them I call them the silver snags. If you fish a lake with stumps it will be all day snags.

Well, after seeing this thread I am going to have to do some fishing this weekend. Have a summer house on a lake that has been in the family for decades. Haven't done any fishing this year. It's rather embarrassing to say that.
Time to break out the 5'6" ultra light rob with 2lb test and go after some large mouths. Even a small one feels like a whale.
