I'm not a fisherman, but I hear if you're really good.. you can just scare the fish into your boat.

Fishing is the greatest sport!!!! I've been fishing on the Feather river (near Sacramento) ans we used a 4 foot leader with about 3 to 4 beads usually neon Orange or green... with size 1 or 2 hooks.... maybe 4-ought Gamakatsu hooks (the best on the market) at the top of the lead put a wieght... the weight need to be adjusted for the current of the river... (IE a heavier weight for faster water) although expect to lose tackle... it is the only sure thing about fishing... I used this in October and earlier so that may have changes slightly as it is later in the year...

*Also Yarn is really good.... it catches on their teeth and helps hold the hook... because the salmon don't actually eatanything.. they are breathing and the hook floats in...

You can't go wrong with and Ugly Stick. These are tough rods, and good for noobs to slam in doors, tailgates, etc... I used a 6'6" spinning rod to catch this fish in Alaska this summer. I should have been using a bigger rig . Have fun and don't get dicouraged if you don't catch anything right away!

Has a fishing forum. It's a bit empty to start but I've slowly been gaining members and I'm hoping it will hit big someday.

Hawg Buster makes bass fishing lures... the newest one is a spider jig. Pretty cool looking IMHO.

What kind of salmon are you going for? If you're fishing Chinook (king), then you're going to need a different rig than coho or sockeye. I agree with the recommendation of an Ugly Stick. They are as tough as they come and don't cost a ton.

As for a reel, we need to figure out what kind of fish you are fishing before we recommend something. Garcia makes fine reels but they aren't cheap. Also, are you going to be using this rig to fish more than once, or just for this one trip? I've caught lots of big salmon in Alaska of every variety you can name with tons of different rod/reel combos - from the cheapest of cheap to the best. I know for certain you can spend much less than $150 for a great salmon rod/reel combo. Don't break your bank.

The type of line you use is also very important...you don't want that salmon to get away! So don't just pick any old line. I wouldn't recommend braided lines for fishing salmon. Fishing for most types of salmon involves drifting the bottom and snags are very common. Braided line can be too difficult to break for its own good and when you get a snag, you'll need to break off and retie. I like a good monofilment like Maxima. Stick with an olive or brown colored line so you can see it easily. Line color doesn't matter a whole lot with most species of salmon.

Let me know the answers to my questions so I can give you more pointed advice. PM me if you like.

1. Place worm on hook
2. Do not place finger on hook
3. Watch behind you as you swing pole backwards to cast
4. When you feel a pulling on the fishing rod, reel in the line
5. Scale fish
6. Gut fish
7. Eat fish
8. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Happy Fishing!!!!

Sorry NAR, but not all salmon do not feed in streams. Coho (silver) certainly do and are readily caught on salmon roe (eggs). They will feed aggressively all the way up until spawn. I also belive that Chum feed in the streams.

Sockeye and king do not. To catch a king you have to tick them off by placing a brightly colored or flashy lure (ie. yarn) right in front of their face. They will get mad and snap at your lure (hopefully ). Sockeye do not feed the the streams at all. Lucky for us fishermen, they swim up stream with their mouths open. They only way to catch em is to snag your line in their mouth.

Although I am primarily a bass fisherman, growing up and living in central Florida for over 30 years, I did a lot of fishing, both salt and fresh water.

Whenever I come to a new area like where I'm living now, I hit the local bait & tackle shops. Ask the guy behind the counter, they can usually hook you up. Equipment is not your main concern right now. I'd be more interested in finding out where the fish are, what bait to use, what type of water they like (still, swirling, tides, etc.) and when to use them. Also, take the time to learn the regulations and limits by heart. Catch & release carefully unless you really want to eat that fish or have it mounted.

Fishing tackle is just like anything else, the good stuff is expensive. I felt pretty foolish when I bought my first $500 rod & reel, but after using it the first time, I knew I had made the right decision.

My dad is an amazing fisher. He made a bait of some ancient Asian formula (like ground beans & rice ball) and fished at the upperstream of merrimack river, Manchester NH.

The river is believed to score only small-mouthed bass and sun fish. But he proved that wrong when he reeled up a totally unexpected 57" Chinese golden carp from the darkest, deepest muddy floor of the river. That thing was a freaking grandfather of all fish in that neighborhood.

He said the carps this old rarely move never mind swimming up. It spends most of the time at the darkest deepest mud only to feed on immediate surroundings.

I still remember, it was an awesome catch.. he fought about good 20 mins until he brought that fat old sucker up to the shore!! :Q

So what did he do with it after catching it? Did he release it?
