Fitting CPU to motherboard

Hi all. Building my first PC from scratch next week and I've pre-ordered a Conroe E6300 .

I've had PC's apart over the years and am plently experienced fiddling with all the main components but the only thing I haven't done is install a CPU and fan to a motherboard. From reading things on the net I gather it's a relatively simple step but also very easy to go wrong and kill the CPU.

So I'm terrified I'm gonna screw it all up fitting it to the mobo! Does anyone have any must-do's and must-don'ts and general advice for this step? thanx guys

I don't know that it's any consolation, but with a Socket T chip like a Conroe, you're more likely to kill the motherboard than the processor.

Intel provides free installation advice with pictures.

The chip will only go on one way. You lay it in there and close the hasp on the coverplate. The way these bad boys go in there is really nice. I've loved them since I built my first LGA775 machine. Piece of cake.

First step: lift the clasp bar. Better rule of thumb: if it takes ANY force to drop the CPU in the socket, *STOP*. The CPU will only fit one way. If it doesn't work, turn it 90 degrees and try again. Simply lay the CPU squarely on top of the socket, and, when it's properly oriented, it will drop into the socket without any force. Once the CPU has dropped into the socket, simply push down the clasp bar, which locks the CPU into the socket. Pushing down the clasp bar will require a tad bit of force.
